A person may experience pain, swelling, and inflammation around the wound within 24–48 hours after the bite. An older 2013 study states that P. multocida can frequently cause cellulitis and abscesses.
Cat love bites don't typically break skin. “It starts off with licking, and the grooming behavior becomes more intense, and you may feel little teeth on you,” explains Dr. Wailani Sung, a staff veterinarian with San Francisco SPCA.
So, your cat is probably showing you affection with this behavior, and acknowledging you as part of their family. A great compliment from your feline friend! Cat “love bites” are usually harmless. They don't break the skin and usually don't hurt.
Essentially, if your cat nips at you during playtime, it's their way of saying, "This is fun, but let's take it to the next level." Engaging in play with your fur baby is a terrific bonding experience, but if your cat's playfulness turns aggressive, they'll bite you or, perhaps, use your entire arm as a chew toy.
Love bites
Some cats may gently nibble or bite their owners as a sign of affection. It is thought to be reminiscent of how a mother cat will groom her kittens with small bites and is more common in cats who have had litters. This is not usually a problem form of biting.
Sometimes a cat bites you, not because they're in the throes of play, or because they're overstimulated by affection, but because you're cat is literally saying “Hello!” to you and trying to get your notice. “Cats can learn that if they nip at you, you respond or give them attention,” says Dr. Delgado.
It probably feels like your four-legged fur baby has got it in for you, but these perceived acts of aggression are actually an indicator of affection. That can be quite difficult to fathom, right? But it's true; they're actually “love bites” rather than a defense mechanism.
Terri Bright, Director of Behavior Services at MSPCA-Angell in Boston, told PetMD. Instead, just give the cat a break. If your cat does give you a love bite that happens to break the skin, wash the little bite immediately. If there is persistent swelling, pain, or redness, go see your doctor.
Biting is generally something people associate with negative feelings, but cats are a little different. When your cat nibbles you playfully, she's really offering her affection. This is much different from a fearful or defensive bite that's meant to cause harm, and the feelings behind it are different as well.
Biting is a totally acceptable behavior for a kitten, but that doesn't mean we want them attacking our hands or bare feet! Instead, we want to encourage kittens to practice these behaviors on an appropriate target. Fortunately, kittens are very adaptive and can learn quickly with a little assistance.
Your cat may actually be surprised if you respond aggressively because if the bite hurts, it's not something they understand at the moment. However, you can let your cat know that this is unwanted behavior if it does actually hurt you.
When these cats bite or scratch you, the clock starts to tick. “See a doctor within eight hours to cut your infection risk,” says emergency medicine physician Stephen Sayles III, MD. “You may need intravenous, or through the vein, antibiotics or, in some cases, you may even need to be hospitalized.”
Most wounds heal within 10 days. But an infection can occur even with proper treatment. So be sure to check the wound daily for signs of infection (see below).
He said people tend to ignore cat bites because they are so small, but the bites should always be monitored for swelling and redness. “It may look like a pin prick, but the rule of thumb is go see a doctor if a cat bites your hand,” Carlsen says.
Turns out, it depends on the cat. Some cats are socialized as kittens to be held and kissed, while others haven't had that exposure and might be put off by a kiss as an expression of love. So, some cats like it and some cats don't—but there are ways of detecting the category into which your feline friend falls.
Ziskin says that cats' “gentle 'love' nibbles or light licks” are a way of showing affection, and that some cats even give kisses! She says that your pet may also show affection by purring, nuzzling up to you, or rubbing their head against your body.
Affection: The Love Bite
If your cat licks then bites you out of the blue then you might be in the presence of a love bite, lucky you! This is a very common (and usually gentle) interaction with cats, especially kittens. If your cat does this they might be trying to show you affection.
Getting your attention
Some cats have learned that biting their human will get them the attention they crave. These felines will usually not really bite, but rather give you a small nip to remind you that you are not paying enough attention to them.
If your cat only attacks when you let out a yelp or a cry, it could be due to noise-induced aggression. A particular frequency can often elicit an aggressive reaction from a cat, such as a person singing, a baby crying, or a person screaming.
In some cases, your cat may hug and bite your arm as a result of being fearful and anxious. This is a defense mechanism showing that the furbaby is trying hard to protect themselves or cover up their territories. Aggression bites from cats may be a result of your fault in most cases.
Often, they wrap their front paws around your hand, scratch with their back feet and then bite – this is how they would kill their prey in the wild. They don't want to hurt you so don't worry, they are just acting on their natural animal instincts and being playful.
Why do some cats dislike belly rubs? Hair follicles on the belly and tail area are hypersensitive to touch, so petting there can be overstimulating, Provoost says. “Cats prefer to be pet and scratched on the head, specifically under their chin and cheeks,” where they have scent glands, Provoost says.
If you are bitten by a cat, wash the wound immediately with soap and water, and then immediately seek medical care. This is not something to play with. As evidenced by my story, even a cat bite treated immediately can become a serious health issue.
