It undergoes rapid eye movement, or REM, sleep. Then it cycles through a phase called slow-wave sleep. And it may even have dreams. The finding comes from a new study of Australian bearded dragons (not fire-breathing ones from fiction, unfortunately), published Thursday in the journal Science.
Like humans, bearded dragons are diurnal: they are awake during the day and they sleep at night. In their natural habitat, they are used to being awake when the sun is up and falling asleep when it is dark outside. For most people, this means that your bearded dragon should be sleeping when you are.

Brumation During Winter Months
Brumation generally occurs in older juveniles and adults and is basically the act of hibernation for bearded dragons. If brumation is beginning, your bearded dragon can sleep for days or even weeks at a time and its appetite may drastically slow down or even stop.
A dragon can enter a long sleep similar to a state of hibernation. Such a sleep allows the creature to pass decades or even centuries without waking.
Bearded dragons can only experience the basic emotions of fear, aggression, and pleasure. Your bearded dragon may enjoy the simple pleasure of being with you, as they have come to associate you with providing food and care, but they can't love you in the sense that you can love them.

Desert Adaptations
A bearded dragon does not urinate in the same way as humans or most other animals. Instead of releasing toxins and waste in a liquid form, he produces a dry, white powdery substance. This substance is uric acid, and is essentially a concentrated form of urine without the liquid portion.

As a general rule, bath time three times a week should be sufficient to keep your dragon clean and hydrated. If your dragon absolutely hates baths, then once a week may be a reasonable goal. If your dragon can't get enough bath time, you may want to do it more frequently, maybe even once a day.
