Yes, gum grafts fail sometimes. Understanding what causes failure is critical to understanding how to achieve success. Many of the factors that lead to failure are the same things that lead to gum recession in the first place.
AVOID PEROXIDE, ALCOHOL, CARBONATED BEVERAGES, AND DRINKING THROUGH A STRAW. After 24 Hours. You may have soft foods, such as cooked vegetables, fish, pasta, and meatloaf, which are easily chewed. You should use utensils and avoid chewing at the surgical site for 2 weeks.
DO NOT USE A STRAW. Avoid hard and crunchy foods, chips, popcorn, and snack foods. Avoid carbonated drinks and alcohol for one week. Avoid spicy foods.
Avoid alcohol for the first 24 hours after your oral surgery, as it can interfere with the healing process. And make sure that you do not drink any alcohol while you are on any pain or antibiotic medication that it may interfere with.
The gum tissue will undergo changes for the next 1-2 weeks. The graft color may change from pink to white. This is NORMAL. Then the color will change to red and then back to pink as the swelling decreases.
You will know that the graft is healing when the swelling subsides and the soft tissues are shrinking. Your gum tissue will begin binding to the root surface and bone. Then, new blood vessels will begin to form to enable blood flow to the graft. This stage takes four to six weeks from surgery.

For the following 24 hours After Treatment you must: Avoid any dark staining drinks like Tea, Coffee, Red Wine, colored soft or alcoholic drinks and fruit juice. Avoid all dark staining foods like bolognese, soy sauce, red meat, chocolate and all fruit except bananas.
Foods and Beverages to Avoid After Gum Graft Surgery
It typically takes patients one to two weeks to heal after gum graft surgery. Patients may be able to add these items back to their diets sooner rather than later. It all depends on how quickly the mouth heals.
The Answer. In general, we recommend that you do not drink coffee for at least a few days after a tooth extraction. The main reason we advise against it is due to the risk coffee poses on the overall healing process.
Usually, you can tell you have a failed gum graft because you will have a large white patch of white tissue that has come off the tooth. Sometimes it may even look like the gum graft is falling off.
You will know that healing has begun when the soft tissues are shrinking and there is less swelling. The gum tissues gradually starts to bind to the root surface and nearby bone surface as well. New vessels will also start to form and the tissues will receive enough blood supply.
Gum grafting won't magically change the appearance of previously receded gums overnight. It takes a few weeks to heal and swelling to subside, and during that time the graft will adapt to the area. After that, it will take another few weeks to see the full benefits — the restored appearance of the gums.
Dairy products like yogurt, milk, ice cream, and butter.
These items are easy to consume and excellent sources of essential minerals and vitamins that are good for your gums and teeth. Mashed potatoes are rich in nutrients and fill you quickly. They are also soft and easy to eat.
Yogurt. Yogurt is a great snack to eat after your wisdom teeth are removed. For one thing, it's completely soft, so you won't have to chew at all. For another, it's a good source of protein and other nutrients that you'll need to help recover after surgery.
Cold or warm temperature foods are recommended for the first day. Coffee or tea can be consumed if it is not hot. After the first day, stay on a soft but balanced diet. Eat foods you can smash with a fork and avoid hard, chewy, or spicy foods.
Do not look at the surgery site after leaving here. Some areas may remain sore for 5 to 6 days. The grafts may be a whitish or grayish appearance for 4 to 6 days after surgery, but this is normal until full blood circulation is restored.
You can avoid dry socket and other complications by skipping your glass of wine with dinner. Alcohol can hinder your body's natural healing process while also increasing the risk of infection. Your dentist will suggest avoiding alcohol for at least 7 to 10 days after your extraction to allow your tissue to heal.
