Most three year olds are capable of spelling their own name with some guidance. However, it is not expected for them to be able to spell other words until they are a bit older.
Some children will learn to write their name when they are 2 or 3 (this is rare, don't feel like your 3 year old should be able to write their name) while others are still having difficulty when they are in year 1 (this is something that I would certainly be working on, but I see it often enough to know its common).
At what age should my child start spelling? Early spelling skills typically begin between age's 5 to 7. This is the time when we see children start to recognize sight words and attempt to spell words based primarily on sound.
The simple answer is don't worry about it. There is no age that your child must know how to write his name. It will probably start emerging around 4 years, maybe a little earlier or later. If your child is too young developmentally to be expected to write, then the same applies to his name.
Around age 4 (sometimes earlier, sometimes later) is when most children exemplify that they have the interest and fine motor skills necessary to learn to write their name.

Hyperlexia is advanced and unexpected reading skills and abilities in children way beyond their chronological age. It is a fairly recently named condition (1967) although earlier descriptions of precocious reading do exist.

Copy letters – Just before age 4, a typical child may begin to copy simple familiar letters and so on. Tracing lines – Trace on top of a thick horizontal line without going off of the line much.
Typically, by the age of three, children should be able to recite the alphabet. However, every child is different. Some toddlers may learn in their twos, and others might not pick it up until the late threes.
If your oldest started reading at four or five years old, that's great, but don't expect your youngest to do the same.
