Lambs should have access to fresh, clean water from day one, alongside their mother's milk, as it's crucial for developing their digestive system (rumen) so they can transition to solid food and eventually be weaned. While they primarily drink milk initially, they start nibbling solid food and drinking water in the first week, with water intake increasing as they eat more dry feed around 4-6 weeks old, before full weaning at 8-12 weeks.

The skin will return to its original position in about one second or less if the animal is hydrated. If the skin stays tented for more than 4 seconds the animal is visibly dehydrated and cannot be transported or sold at a saleyard.
You can start introducing your lamb to grass and hay at approximately 8 weeks old. Or you can work out the appropriate time by multiplying its birth weight by 3 and waiting for it to achieve this weight. Lambs should be fully weaned by 13 weeks when they can continue to enjoy a diet of hay, grass, and water.

A typical sign of a worm problem is unthrifty sheep. An unthrifty sheep is one that is not eating properly, is losing condition, tends to lag behind the mob when moved and, in severe cases, is clearly weak. A worm problem often (but not always) results in sheep scouring and becoming daggy.
They stay separate for 1–2 days. Weather permitting, healthy ewes and lambs can go out into the field after 3–5 days.
The colostrum 123 rule: 'feed the first milk the cow produces, within 2 hours of birth and feed at least 3 litres', has seen a significant improvement in calf health. There is still room for further improvement by delivering good quality colostrum within the correct timeframe.

Major predators for sheep and goats are coyotes and dogs, but for younger animals, foxes, bobcats, vultures, or even raccoons can be problems as well.
Two common causes of sudden death include clostridial infections and pasteurella diseases. Investigate any cases of sudden death with your vet promptly to reduce further losses. Post-mortem examination can be a useful tool.
It is therefore essential under intensive conditions of fattening where lambs are expected to reach marketable size quickly to feed lamb diets high in energy concentrates and a minimum amount of roughage to maintain the normal functioning of the digestive tract (8-10 percent of the total diet or 80-100 g daily).
It was clear that feeding lambs cold milk from just over a week of age had no negative impact on their performance. In fact, lambs fed cold milk performed marginally better through to weaning – achieving a daily live weight gain of 0.27kg/day compared with the 0.25kg/day delivered by the warm milk fed group of lambs.
Lambs do search specifically the proximity of their mother or human caregiver. Attachment to humans develop more easily in lambs reared without mothers.
