Some snakes such as eastern brown snakes are active during the day, others prefer to hunt in the evening, while some species are more active at night during the hotter months. Many snakes have excellent eyesight, but it's not usually the main sense they rely on when hunting.
GOLDEN CROWN SNAKE
A small, nocturnal snake often found all over Sydney and coastal NSW. Often brought inside by domestic cats.
Australia's snake season generally hits between September and April as they start to venture out looking for food or a mate, but this can be brought forward if the end of winter and start of spring are unseasonably warm.
Some are active at night, others during the day. Snakes are predators and eat a wide variety of animals, including rodents, insects, birds' eggs and young birds. Snakes are cold-blooded and must move to a suitable surrounding environment to regulate their body temperature.
Brown Snakes are found in a variety of habitats, but usually prefer open dry areas. They are a ground dwelling snake that's active mainly in the daytime. In hot weather, they can move around at night, but usually retreat to shelter.
Snakes like to warm their bodies in the sunshine. Hiking in the evening or early in the morning helps you avoid their favorite part of the day. Wear appropriate clothing, especially hiking boots with a higher top (there are even snake chaps if you really want to put on some armor but I think they are overkill!)
While they can be out any time, rattlesnakes are most active in the morning and from dusk into the night. They hunt mice and rodents in darkness because they can sense body heat with special organs on their face.
What Smell Do Snakes Hate? Strong and disrupting smells like sulfur, vinegar, cinnamon, smoke and spice, and foul, bitter, and ammonia-like scents are usually the most common and effective smells against snakes since they have a strong negative reaction to them.
Avoid wandering around in the dark. If you are out at night, always use a flashlight, because most snakes are active on warm nights. Never try to pick up a snake, even if it is dead. A snake's reflexes can still cause the snake to strike up to an hour after it has died.
Depending on the species and time of year, snakes can be both nocturnal and diurnal. The most recognizable snake noise is a hiss followed by the rattle of a rattlesnake.
South Australia
Sand dunes are common breeding grounds for snakes of this region. Most of the venomous tend to be in this area. This is because it receives large amounts of sun but at the same time allows for enough cover for protection.
Norfolk Island is a very safe place to visit. There are no snakes on the island, and most of our spiders are harmless (even the big ones).
Snakes live all over South Australia and are common in the suburbs and at the beach, so don't think you'll never see one. Brown snakes - of a few different species -are found across much of South Australia, but each region also has its local specialty – and most are venomous.
Brown snakes hunt by actively looking for prey and searching in likely hiding places. They have good eyesight and once prey is detected they will give chase and subdue the prey using both venom and constriction.
Ammonia. Snakes have an intense dislike for this smell, making it a great method to try if you're wondering how to get rid of snakes. Soak rags in ammonia and place them along the perimeter of your yard or home as a deterrent.
We repeat, move away from the snake. That means don't walk up to it, poke it with a stick, try to pick it up, etc. We recommend retreating a safe distance away but keeping an eye on the snake. If you can, use your camera or smartphone's zoom to snap a quick picture of the snake.

Vibrations from a lawnmower is a good way to scare away snakes. It won't keep them away for good but will scare them off long enough for you to work in your yard.
Will snakes stay away from dogs? Snakes don't like to get in the way of dogs, the reason being that dogs are louder, bigger, and more annoying than a good snack. If your dog is present in an area, the chances are high that snakes will stay away.
Ammonia: Snakes dislike the odor of ammonia so one option is to spray it around any affected areas. Another option is to soak a rug in ammonia and place it in an unsealed bag near any areas inhabited by snakes to deter them away.

Snakes can't climb a sheer wall without having some small grooves or patterns to help them get a grip. Some man-made walls that snakes CAN climb include brick walls, stucco walls, stone walls, and fences. These wall types have divots, holds, or grooves that allow snakes to cling onto them as they go up them.
How to Identify Snake Feces. When snakes excrete waste, it is actually a mixture of feces and urine that looks white and is more of a liquid than a solid, much like bird droppings. The pests' waste may contain bones, hair, scales, and other indigestible materials leftover from meals.
