Spraying a dog with water can stop barking temporarily by interrupting the behavior, but it's generally discouraged by trainers as it's a punishment that teaches fear, not a solution; it can worsen anxiety, lead to aggression (redirected or otherwise), or be ineffective if the dog enjoys the water, failing to address the root cause of the barking and harming your bond. Better approaches involve positive reinforcement to teach calm behavior or identifying and managing the underlying emotional trigger for the barking, say trainers and animal behavior experts.
If you find that the clicker method is not working, you can fill a spray bottle with 1 part vinegar to 1 part water (for example, 1/4 cup vinegar and 1/4 cup water). When the dog starts barking, simply spray the vinegar water in the direction of the dog … not in its face.
When your dog is alone at home, try leaving music or a TV show on to create white noise. The loud sound of the radio or television can also divert his or her attention and help him or her control barking. Call his/her name and give a not-so-easy command in a firm voice, such as 'lie down'.

Never Punish Your Dog
Examples of punishment would be: Yelling or making loud noises. Throwing objects. Spraying water at your dog.
However, remote punishment is preferred. Remote punishment consists of using something that appears unconnected to the punisher to stop the problem behavior. Examples include using spray bottles, throwing object in the direction of the puppy to startle (but not hit) it, and making loud noises.
Rule #2: The punishment must suppress the behaviour, or it risks becoming just plain abuse. Even a spray of water can easily become abusive.

Another interpretation is the 10% rule for treats, limiting them to 10% of daily calories to maintain a balanced diet, ensuring most nutrition comes from complete dog food.
But does spraying your dog with water work? A well-cited study in Nature points out that spraying doesn't teach the dog what to do instead of the bad behavior. Negative reinforcement dynamics can muddy the message, too. Aversive methods can elevate stress, confusion, or even aggression.
Never hit, kick, or hold your dog's mouth shut. This will only teach your dog to fear you and may cause aggression problems. The proper way to curtail barking is to identify the cause and create interventions that both reduce the reason for the barking and train your dog that it is not acceptable behavior.
