Dogs release their eggs over a period of a few days in the middle of their heat cycle so it is possible for the same male to breed her more than once...it is also possible for other males to breed her during that time. This is one way to have pups that look drastically different from one to another.
The fertility rate in a slip mating is not quite as good, as there is often some spillage of semen when withdrawal occurs prior to the locking phase. However, conception is still possible and even likely, providing ejaculation occurred prior to the dogs' separating.
A whopping 40% of female dogs will fall pregnant after just one mating session! That incredibly high number means you are at considerable risk of having a litter of unwanted puppies if you are not careful. Thankfully, there are relatively safe means to prevent pregnancy after mating.

Does Getting Stuck Mean the Female Dog Is Pregnant? The longer dogs are stuck together in a copulatory tie, the greater the chance that the semen will reach the eggs. But pregnancy in dogs is never guaranteed, Greer says, "Just like in people, not every mating is successful."
Being in a "Tie"
A tie occurs when the male and female dog are stuck for some time. However, some dogs have also become pregnant without a tie, and some dogs don't get pregnant despite tying, so it's not a guarantee.
It's totally normal for dogs to get stuck together after mating. It's called a “copulatory tie”. Don't do anything to try to separate the dogs, especially pull them apart by force, which could hurt them! Stay calm and wait for the dogs to unstick themselves.
The male will mount her, and after breeding will remain attached to the female for 5-20 minutes; this is called the tie. It is natural at this point for the dogs to be joined facing in opposite directions. Leave the dogs alone until the tie ends naturally.
Once tied the male dog will often step over the female or be turned by handlers into a position so that the dogs are back-to-back. The tie will usually last for five to ten minutes.
Male dogs don't have a clear reproductive cycle like female dogs, so if your dog is intact, you may look for signs your male dog wants to mate. Most unneutered males can breed all the time, so how much they want to mate depends on whether they smell a female in heat nearby or their health.
If you're an owner that's just getting into the breeding industry, the whole series of events can truly be overwhelming. And while whining during dog mating can be a very common thing, it is something to keep aware of to ensure your dogs health.
A best practice is 4-6 litters per dog
Most reputable breeders will cap even their fittest, best mothers at around 4-6 litters so that she can be spayed while she is still young and at her healthiest.
The right time to breed your dog is when she is around two to three years old. Her body has then become fully matured to take on the full stress of pregnancy and the things that come after.
Veterinarians and scientists aren't completely sure why dogs and canines end up stuck back-to-back. It may be to help ensure the success of the mating. Even still, it is possible for the mating to fail and the female doesn't become pregnant.
If your normally calm and relaxed dog suddenly starts acting restless, pacing back and forth, and trying to escape your home or yard, it's a good indication that he's looking for a mate. Additionally, if your dog starts mounting other dogs, people, or objects, this is another sign that he's ready to mate.
Dogs like women's softer voices and smaller figures. They may be intimidated by a man's larger frame, deeper voice, and facial hair. Most veterinarians and primary caregivers are female, meaning dogs are more frequently exposed to women throughout their lives.
"...if a male dog is introduced to a non-receptive or aggressive female, a refusal to breed is a normal result." Physical conditions that cause discomfort in the spine or rear legs can result in a reluctance to copulate. These conditions may include spinal disease, arthritis, or trauma.
Should I change her diet? After mating, food intake should remain the same during the first two-thirds of pregnancy (approximately six weeks after mating). Ensure you feed your dog a premium, high-quality diet approved by your veterinarian during pregnancy.
Walk your male dog regularly, at least 15 minutes each day. Your male dog is feeling a lot when a female is in heat, so he needs to get out his energy. Walking him regularly gets him away from the female dog and gives him lots of stimulation, helping him feel more calm and relaxed when you get home.
