The Initial Phase In the earlier days, Diana was simply afraid of her mother-in-law. Though she carefully followed all the formal traditions and courtesies, she kept a distance from the Queen. Some observers found Diana's uneasiness with the Queen surprising since she was not an outsider to the Royal family.
For her part Diana, somewhat naively, continued to see the Queen as a family referee with regard to her separation from Princes Charles. She was frustrated that she had not intervened to end Prince Charles's relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles.

Before Prince Charles married Princess Diana (then Diana Spencer) in 1981, he was apparently already smitten with his former girlfriend Camilla Parker Bowles (then Camilla Shand).
Though it seems almost comically old fashioned now, the fact that Camilla had a dating history was a major strike against her. "The conventions of the time called for the heir to the British throne to marry a woman who at least appeared to be virginal," writes Bedell Smith.
It is known that before the Queen, who is the symbol of national unity, everyone bowed. "But that day, it is Elizabeth who bowed her head as a sign of respect for the passage of Diana's coffin, the woman who wore more than anyone else had defied the conventions of the palace."
Hasnat Khan, a Pakistani heart surgeon, and Princess Diana dated for two years, from 1995 to 1997. Diana reportedly described him as the "love of her life" to friends, and introduced him to her sons Prince William and Prince Harry.
The queen was in such disbelief that she mused out loud, "'Someone must have greased the brakes,'" royal biographer Ingrid Seward reported in her 2015 book The Queen's Speech: An Intimate Portrait of the Queen in Her Own Words. Diana was pronounced dead at 3 a.m., British Summer Time, on Aug. 31, 1997.

In life, Diana revitalized the British monarchy and in death, she changed it forever. Today, her legacy lives on in everything from Windsor's more accessible approach to the public to William and Harry's charity work to virtually everything Kate does.
What were Princess Diana's last words? The firefighter on the scene of Princess Diana's accident revealed the last words she spoke before her death in an interview with The Independent. According to the firefighter, Xavier Gourmelon, the Princess of Wales asked: “My God, what has happened?”
The duke recalls meeting Camilla, whom he and his brother called “the other woman,” for the first time, and notes that it was far from a pleasant experience for him. He described their introduction as an “injection,” for which he had to brace himself.
"One of the most shocking things that Diana told me was that the night before the wedding, Charles told her that he didn't love her," Thornton said. "I think Charles didn't want to go into the wedding on a false premise. He wanted to square it with her, and it was devastating for Diana."
Diana was initially friendly with Camilla—until she found out about her relationship with Charles. Before that uncomfortable lunch, Camilla and Diana got along relatively well while the princess and Prince Charles were courting in 1980.

He sent his son a letter advising him that it was time to make a decision: propose to Diana or let her go. Charles wanted to do the right thing for “this Country and for my family”. He proposed to Diana at Windsor Castle on 6 February 1981.
If you watch the footage, Princess Margaret was not the only person who didn't bow her head as the coffin passed. There was nothing significant in that. That the one person in the UK who does not need to bow to anyone DID, WAS significant.
Actors Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise, and Tom Hanks were among the mourners at the funeral. Michael famously "bawled his eyes out" at the funeral.
