In medicine, "a slow death" refers to a disease that progresses slowly and the person may take many years to die. Example: Alzheimers disease or AIDS. If a person is tortured, he/she can also have a slow death or die slowly.
Examples of slow death
He died a very slow death. Our concerns are about the future and the slow death of the adult education service because it would not disappear but would gradually deteriorate.
The group of drugs most commonly used to end life is called the barbiturates. They cause the activity of the brain and nervous system to slow down.

Visions and Hallucinations
Visual or auditory hallucinations are often part of the dying experience. The appearance of family members or loved ones who have died is common. These visions are considered normal. The dying may turn their focus to “another world” and talk to people or see things that others do not see.
Agonal breathing or agonal gasps are the last reflexes of the dying brain. They are generally viewed as a sign of death, and can happen after the heart has stopped beating.
In time, the heart stops and they stop breathing. Within a few minutes, their brain stops functioning entirely and their skin starts to cool. At this point, they have died.
There are many misconceptions about death and grief that can make mourning an even more difficult experience. Our society expects people to get used to grief as they age and lose more of their loved ones. However, no matter how many times you've experienced loss, it never truly gets easier.
Livor mortis usually sets in 20 to 30 minutes after death and increases in intensity until it becomes fixed at about 12 hours. Assessment of livor mortis can be useful in determining the approximate time of death or cause of death, based on the approximate stage of lividity and the specific coloration.
What Happens One Hour After Death? At the moment of death, all of the muscles in the body relax (primary flaccidity ). The eyelids lose their tension, the pupils dilate, the jaw may fall open, and the joints and limbs are flexible.
