Twins are more common now primarily due to the widespread use of fertility treatments (like IVF, which often involves transferring multiple embryos) and older maternal age, as women are having children later in life, and older mothers naturally have higher chances of releasing multiple eggs. These factors increase the likelihood of fraternal (dizygotic) twins, with some rise also seen in identical (monozygotic) twins due to the manipulation of eggs in assisted reproduction.
The number of twin births has increased for two reasons. One is the advent of IVF. The other is that in many countries, the average age of becoming a mother has increased, and older mothers are more likely to have twins.
One of Africa's largest countries, Nigeria, has been nicknamed “The Land of Twins” by the BBC because it has the highest rate of twin births in the world. In Igbo Ora, in Oyo State in south west Nigeria, the rate is much higher, the last recorded figures revealed an average of 50 sets of twins in every 1,000 births.
In 1980, 1 in every 53 babies born in the United States was a twin, compared with 1 in every 30 births in 2009 (Figure 1). Over the three decades, the twin birth rate rose by 76 percent, from 18.9 to 33.2 per 1,000 births (or from 1.9 percent to 3.3 percent of all births) (Figure 1).
The gene for hyperovulation can come from either side of the family, but the woman would need to have the gene in order for the couple to have twins based on genetics. In other words, twins on the father's side of the family will have no influence on your chances of having twins.
Age: If you're over the age of 35, you're more likely to release multiple eggs during ovulation. Family history: If your mother's side has a history of fraternal twins, there is a chance you could conceive twins naturally.
The Yoruba people have the highest rate of twinning in the world, at 45–50 twin sets (90–100 twins) per 1,000 live births, possibly because of high consumption of a specific type of yam containing a natural phytoestrogen which may stimulate the ovaries to release an egg from each side.
Sex determination in twins occurs as normal, with males having XY and females having XX. The sex of a fetus, even twins, can be identified via an ultrasound at week 14-21 of the pregnancy. Twins can consist of males, females, or both, with female twins being the most common.
Bible verses about twins
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. If they stumble, the first will lift up his friend—but woe to anyone who is alone when he falls and there is no one to help him get up.
The Nigerian town of Igbo-Ora is famous as the world's ''capital'' of twins due to its unusually high number of twins, from the youngest babies to the elderly.
Percy Nylander clarified many of the factors that contribute to this high incidence of twinning. His analyses of Nigerian placentation and zygosity have shown the increased rate of multiple pregnancy to be a result of higher proportions of dizygotic twins and trizygotic triplets as compared to Caucasian populations.
High rates of twins are found throughout Central Africa. With 27.9 twins per 1000 births (2.8%), Benin has the highest national average. On the other hand, the twinning rate in Asia and Latin America is very low: often less than 8–10 per 1000 births (0.8–1%).
Number of previous pregnancies – the greater the number of pregnancies a woman has already had, the higher her odds of conceiving twins. Heredity – a woman is more likely to conceive fraternal twins if she is a fraternal twin, has already had fraternal twins, or has siblings who are fraternal twins.
stated that a research study found that women, on average, could have around 15 babies in their lifetime.
Statistics show twins or higher order multiples can take longer to reach milestones, especially those born prematurely. With the average pregnancy usually lasting 40 weeks, if twins were born at 35 weeks, their progress and milestones will be monitored as though they were five weeks younger than they really are.
Identical twins share the same gender—boy-boy, girl-girl. Boy-girl twins are always fraternal. A boy-girl pair may be identical with a rare genetic mutation, but this brother and sister are like regular siblings born together.
Heredity on the father's side does not increase a couple's odds of having multiples. This is true even if his family is full of multiples. Men, of course, don't ovulate, so even if they've inherited that hyperovulation gene from their parents, it doesn't increase their own odds of conceiving twins.
The highest twinning rate in the world is in Igbo-Ora, Nigeria, often called the "Twin Capital of the World," with a rate of approximately 45 to 50 sets of twins per 1,000 live births.
Quintuplets (5) The Lyon quintuplets (born 29 April 1896) were the first American quintuplets who were all born alive.
Asian Americans and Native Americans have the lowest rates for twins.
You may experience more nausea or fatigue and notice some additional symptoms that singleton pregnancies don't typically present. According to the American Pregnancy Association, these other symptoms may be indicators of twins: More than one heartbeat detected by a Doppler. Increased hCG levels in the body.
Two Japanese sisters have been certified by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest living identical twins at over 107 years and 300 days. Umeno Sumiyama and Koume Kodama have broken the record set by late Japanese twin sisters Kin Narita and Gin Kanie.
At 37, pregnancy is still a viable option for many women. While fertility does decline with age, numerous women at this stage successfully conceive and have healthy pregnancies.
