A hippo would almost certainly win a fight against a single lion, or even a small pride, due to its immense size, incredible bite force (strong enough to crush bone), and aggressive nature, with lions usually only risking attacks on vulnerable young hippos, though a very large, coordinated pride might take down an adult, but it's extremely dangerous.
Lions have the advantage in speed, and they can catch up to a hippo in the wild, but they probably do not want to. The better, safer option is to just evacuate the area or bring along enough of the pride to win. All in all, a hippo has enough advantages in the fight to beat a lion.
Elephants are one of the few animals that would stand a chance in a fight against a hippo. They have a great size and height advantage against them. The average elephant can weigh between 6,000 and 12,000 pounds, and they can stand from 7 to 12 feet tall.
The hippopotamus is extremely territorial and will defend their territory from most animals, including lions and crocodiles.
1. Hyenas. Hyenas are often depicted as dirty, ugly scavengers, yet in the wild, they are the biggest threat to lions. These two species engage in fierce competition over food sources, leading to epic confrontations.
Cape buffalo
Although it is more often the other way around, with prides of lions regularly hunting and killing buffalo, these bovids can defend themselves and have been known to seriously injure and even kill lions when threatened. Their large size and formidable horns mean that they are not always an easy meal.
The mosquito is the world's most dangerous animal, responsible for over 700,000 deaths annually, primarily by transmitting deadly diseases like malaria, dengue, and Zika virus. While animals like sharks, lions, and snakes kill people, mosquitoes spread infections, making them the deadliest creature to humans, far surpassing any other.
Scarface didn't just defend his space, he expanded it fearlessly. What made him even more incredible was his courage to fight animals no other lion dared to face. He drove crocodiles out of his territory and is believed to be the only lion known to kill adult hippos in single combat.
Lion's greatest fear is humans, as they have hunted and killed them in the wild, posing a greater threat to lions than any other animal. Aside from humans, lions also tend to avoid giraffes and elephants, both of which are larger in size and can easily hurt lions in violent encounters.
One weakness of the mighty hippopotamus is it can neither swim nor float in water, instead 'walking'. Despite this, they still pose a massive threat in bodies of water even with reduced mobility. These factors are dangerous, but lets talk about the MOST deadly feature of the hippo, its bite.
Hippos have the largest kill record of any animal on the planet for a reason. They're highly aggressive, their teeth are multiple-inch blades, and their skin is very thick and tough. The whale's teeth are too small to do anything more than give the hippo minor knicks, while the hippo's teeth with rip the whale apart.
Tigers are stronger, more powerful and one of nature's most feared predators. Tigers range 10 feet long and they can weigh 600 pounds. A tiger can carry something twice its own body weight.
Hippos have jaws that can widen to almost 180° and have gigantic teeth. They can also run blisteringly fast for something their size, around 30km/h (18mph), meaning it will be like the Gorilla got hit by a car. A car that hates Gorillas.
A hippo's bite force measures between 1,800 and 2,000 PSI (pounds per square inch)—enough to crush bones, tear through boats, or snap a Nile crocodile in half. Their jaws, capable of opening up to 150 degrees (nearly three times a human's range), span 4–5 feet wide, making them one of Africa's deadliest animals.
Another key reason why lions do not eat hyenas is the diet that hyenas consume. Hyenas are notorious scavengers, often feasting on rotting carcasses, decomposing flesh, and even bones. Their strong digestive systems allow them to consume and process food that would make other animals sick.
Scarface, a male lion born in Kenya's Maasai Mara in 2007, became legendary for the scar over his right eye and his fierce dominance. Rumored to have killed hundreds of hyenas and over 100 rival lions, he was even said to have fought off hippos and crocodiles—rare feats for any lion.
Healthy adult hippos have few natural predators, but young calves are vulnerable to Nile crocodiles, lions, hyenas, and leopards; adult hippos are primarily threatened by humans (poaching, habitat loss) and occasionally taken down by large prides of lions or exceptionally large crocodiles, with elephants and rhinos sometimes clashing but rarely killing them.
Weaknesses: Hippos are very powerful and can sprint quickly for short runs on land, but they lack stamina and agility, which means they are potentially at risk for prolonged fights or pursuits.
African wild dog. The African wild dog, (Lycaon pictus) is a canine native to Sub-Saharan Africa. While it shares its environment and food sources with other top predators, they have no natural predators of their own.
A pride of lions won't target a fully grown rhino. The risk of injury and the amount of energy it would require to bring down such a large animal make it not worth the kill for the lion. But that doesn't mean that lions always leave rhinos alone. Lions may target rhino babies and old, weak, or injured rhinos.
A "silent killer" animal can refer to predators known for stealth like leopards, owls, or snakes (like the Common Krait), but also to seemingly harmless creatures like the venomous slow loris (a mammal) or even the disease-carrying mosquitoes, highlighting threats that are quiet, unassuming, or invisible, from stealth hunters to disease vectors.
The Amur leopard is one of the rarest big cats in the world, with only around 100 individuals left in the wild.
