Flowers are thrown on a coffin primarily by immediate family members and close friends during the burial or committal service as a final farewell, symbolizing return to the earth and offering comfort, though sometimes other mourners are invited to participate, following the lead of the chief mourners, with large arrangements often adorning the casket throughout the service.
The flowers on top of a coffin are often referred to as a "casket spray." This floral arrangement is specifically designed to adorn the top of the casket during a funeral or memorial service, serving as a tribute to honor the memory of the deceased.
Funeral flower etiquette dictates that you always address funeral flowers to the funeral parlor, with an instruction informing the funeral home personnel that the flowers are for the funeral of the name of the decedent. You can also take funeral flowers to the grave – especially if you're a family member.
Is throwing dirt on the coffin a religious ritual? Yes, in many traditions. For example, in Jewish funerals, each mourner is encouraged to place dirt in the grave as a mitzvah (good deed). Christianity also embraces the symbolism of returning the body to the earth as part of God's design.
Afterwards they'll stay on top of the coffin until lifted off by the funeral director at the graveside and then they'll be placed on top of the earth after the grave has been filled in. Mourners will normally have left the site before this happens and will need to return later to see the flowers in situ.
We usually place a paper towel over the face so that any cosmetics we put on them will not be transferred to the top lid of the casket while closed. It also gives the director a quick second to ensure the deceased is still presentable. Mouth or eyes not opened slightly.
Give the flowers away
“I can also put little vases into arrangements so that they can be lifted out and used again.” After the day itself, you could take the bouquets home, give them to guests and friends or donate them to care homes, hospices or your local library, where they might bring pleasure to even more people.
Natural Changes: After death, the body goes through various natural changes. The lower extremities, particularly the legs and feet, may show signs of swelling or discoloration that are harder to address through embalming. Covering these areas helps maintain a more peaceful appearance.
Decomposition Timeline: On average, it takes 10 to 15 years for a body to decompose fully in a casket, though this can extend to several decades in sealed metal caskets, especially when embalming is involved.
The Benefit of this Rite
When Imām al-Ṣādiq (a) was asked the reason for sprinkling water over the grave, he answered: 'the punishment turns away from it (the [inhabitant of the] grave) so long as the moistness remains in the soil'.
The flowers should be addressed with the name of the deceased, name of faculty (funeral home, church, nursing home chapel etc.)
Flowers are the best way to express your condolences and sympathy to the bereaved – and honor the deceased. Because of their versatility, they are also considered sympathy flowers by the florists. Flowers are a language of love and empathy in this time of mourning.
The Symbol of Peace
Crossed hands show peace and rest. After a long life, the person's body takes a calm pose. It gives the feeling that the person is no longer in pain or fear. Families say it helps them see their loved one at peace for the last time.
However, unless specifically requested by the deceased or their family, you should avoid any bright colors such as yellows, oranges, pinks, and reds. In terms of accessories, a white shirt is the most common item of clothing to wear under a suit, while jewelry should be kept to a minimum and not too flashy.
You should never touch coins—or anything else—left on a gravestone because every token has a personal meaning. These items are not simply left behind by accident—they're meaningful symbols for grieving families.
Stage Three: Decay
Active decay begins in the period between a week to 10 days following death. Fluids evacuate from the body's orifices and muscles and other soft tissues begin to liquefy. Teeth and nails will fall out in the coming weeks and as the body liquefies, it will lead to a reduction in insect activity.
Generally, the body is dressed in clothing before being placed in a casket or cremation container for the cremation process. Families often include items in the cremation container, such as religious objects and flowers.
In most modern cemeteries, a burial vault or grave liner is placed around the casket. This vault helps protect the casket from soil pressure and moisture. However, no vault or casket is 100% waterproof forever. Over time, water and air may seep in.
Cremation turns the body of someone who has died into ashes. This is only done after a person has died, so they do not see or feel anything.
For the first few minutes of the postmortem period, brain cells may survive. The heart can keep beating without its blood supply. A healthy liver continues breaking down alcohol. And if a technician strikes your thigh above the kneecap, your leg likely kicks, just as it did at your last reflex test with a physician.
