The name Bartholomew Roberts might not be quite as famous as Blackbeard, Captain Kidd or the popular pirates of fiction, but his short-lived career set him apart as a pirate par excellence. In just three years, he captured hundreds of vessels, making him the scourge of Atlantic trade.
Contrary to the modern-day picture of the traditional tyrannical pirate, he commanded his vessels with the permission of their crews and there is no known account of his ever having harmed or murdered those he held captive. Blackbeard was known to take valuable instruments from the ships he plundered.
There he encountered an armed contingent sent by Virginia Governor Alexander Spotswood and led by Royal Navy Lieutenant Robert Maynard. In a desperate battle aboard Maynard's sloop, Blackbeard and a number of his fellow pirates were killed.

When he held prisoners for ransom, such as the Governor's son during the week-long Charlestown blockade in 1718, he asked for expensive medical supplies. This included mercury which, when injected through a urethral syringe, was a common (ineffective) treatment for syphilis.
