The strongest mortal man was named Húrin. According to The Silmarillion, no Man in the First Age could surpass his combat skills. Húrin and his brother Huor fought alongside Turgon and his Elves in a battle called the Nírnaeth Arnoediad, but the battle was a disaster.
I say that the greatest swordsman is Aragorn, but it seems the general consensus is that Fingolfin is the greatest swordsman.
Legolas is the greatest warrior in the history of Middle Earth. He defeated several Mumakil in the battle of the Pelennor Fields and also saved Bilbo and the Dwarves on their quest to Erebor, and probably also was heavily involved in winning the Battle of Five Armies.
Could Legolas beat Sauron? Legolas was a nice little Elf princeling yet he was nothing next to the Elven king Gil-Galad. So no, Aragorn and Legolas could not defeat Sauron in hand-to-hand combat.

He is a strong man who can wield a sword and shield with great skill, and he ends up giving his life to defend Merry and Pippin. In a way, Boromir was the golden boy of Gondor, and the fact he died doesn't mean he wasn't extremely experienced.
Morgoth Was Originally More Powerful Than Sauron
When he couldn't accomplish that, he began to war against the other Valar and rule over Middle-earth with his fires and evil creations. With this turn to darkness, Melkor became known as Morgoth. While at war, Morgoth lured many beings to his cause.

Ents are arguably the strongest race in terms of physical power. They are said to be able to bend steel and stone as if it is paper, and their attack on Isengard in The Two Towers shows them to be an unstoppable force.
Sauron. Aside from the first dark lord Morgoth, this iconic villain is so strong and menacing that he manages to be the most ominous and influential force in Middle-Earth, especially with the full power of the Ring.
Though neither is someone you'd wish to annoy, Galadriel is generally considered more powerful than Elrond in Lord of the Rings. Not only is she older than her Rivendell counterpart, but Galadriel witnessed the light from Valinor's Two Trees, giving her a mystic quality.
He will fight in the Last Battle against the Valar and their allies, but will ultimately be slain by Túrin Turambar, the Man he cursed. By finally defeating Morgoth, Túrin will avenge not only himself, but all members of the race of Men.
Although he is still chained he is confident that he can beat her. They fight for a long time. Jaime is amazed at her skill with the sword and realizes that she is stronger than him. Finally Brienne beats him.
