Both parents contribute approximately equally to their child's height potential. The old wives' tales about height coming predominantly from one parent are largely myths. Instead, scientists have identified that height is a polygenic trait, meaning it's influenced by many different genes working together.
Women generally stop growing any taller around the age of 15, whereas men keep going for another three years. For this reason men tend to be taller than women, for a given set of height genes.

Stunted height growth is primarily caused by severe malnutrition (especially protein, vitamins, minerals) and chronic illness during childhood, but also by hormonal issues (growth hormone deficiency, thyroid problems), genetic conditions, extreme stress/neglect, and certain medications like long-term corticosteroids, all impacting the bone growth plates. While genetics set your potential height, these environmental and health factors prevent you from reaching it, especially if they occur during the critical first 1000 days (conception to age 2).

Myth: menarche means the end of growth is near
The reality is that the average gain in height after menarche is about 7 cm (3 inches), and it is even greater for girls who menstruate on the early side of normal.
There is no evidence that caffeine consumption can directly stunt growth. “Caffeine does not meaningfully impact how tall a child gets,” according to pediatric endocrinologist Roy Kim. Conclusions: Final height is influenced by both height and the age of onset of the PGS in normal maturing children. A normal but early puberty exerts a negative effect on final height. A delayed PGS exerts a positive effect on final height.
