Silent D: The letter D is silent when it comes just before the letters N and G. Examples: Wednesday, pledge, grudge, cadge. The letter D is also not pronounced in the following common words: handsome, handkerchief, sandwich.
A silent letter is a letter that isn't heard when a particular word is pronounced. Think of the “b” in subtle, the “a” in bread, and the “h,” in ghost. Almost every word in the alphabet plays the role of a silent letter in at least one word.
B is silent before 't' and after 'm'. C is silent after 's' and before 'i,' 'e,' or 'y. ' C is also silent in the combination 'ck. '
Silent C words
There are many examples of this, such as science, scissors, scent, ascent, crescent, descent, descend, disciple, scene, obscene, fluorescent, abscess, fascinate, and muscle. The silent C also shows up in a few other weird words such as czar, acquire, indict, and yacht.
Silent “L” Patterns
If an “L” is found towards the end of the word, before the letters “f,” “v”, “k” and “m,” but after the letter “a,” then it's usually silent (behalf, calve, walk, almond).
Letter 'b' is silent in 'plumber'. Letter 'b' is generally not pronounced if letters 'm' and 'b' occur together in a word. Examples : plumb, comb, tomb, plumber etc.
But as Merriam-Webster Dictionary points out, one unusual letter is never silent: the letter V. While it makes an appearance in words like quiver and vivid, you can rest assured it always behaves the exact same way.
neighbour, daughter, fight, straight the sound 'gh' is silent. honest, honour, hour, heir the sound 'h' is silent.
F. While some people do in fact pronounce the second f in fifth, the first pronunciation given in our dictionary is the one that omits it. Overall, however, f is to be commended for its performance generally.
So what's the rule? We pronounce the –ed as /d/ after voiced consonants, except /d/. For example rained, failed, and robbed. We pronounce the –ed as /t/ after unvoiced consonants, except /t/.
As The Independent nicely says it, "Silent Letters are the ghosts of pronunciations past." Older versions of these words had pronounced Ns. Most of them come to English from Latin. For example autumn comes from the Latin autumnus and column comes from the Latin columna. In these words, the N was pronounced.
The silent c: Miscellaneous muscle
'Muscle' – we say the same as 'mussel', the seafood.
Silent letter rule: don't pronounce the "b" in words ending in -bt, like "debt" and "doubt".
In the word, 'scissors', the 'c' is silent. You don't get to hear the pronunciation of the 'letter c'.
Very few words in the English language contain the consonant cluster –rtg-, and in only one of those words (and its derivatives) is the t silent: mortgage.
In the word 'sandwich', if you looked that up in the dictionary, you WOULD see the D sound. But it's actually never pronounced that way. So Wednesday, Handsome: the dictionary says no D.
There is a silent "d" in the word "Wednesday" .
u. Never pronounced after the letter 'q', as in queue, antique and queen, but also silent with other vowels, for example biscuit, guest, rogue, and disguise.
