The term Tezpur, in the district of Sonitpur means town of blood. The city acquired its name owing to a myth involving a fierce battle that was fought between Hari (Lord Krishna) and Hara (Lord Shiva in the form of Banasura, the king), and the entire city was drenched in human blood, hence the name.
The principal attraction of Tezpur includes its rich history, old temples, forests, and wildlife. The area is famous for its Tea plantations, and the undulating stretch of tea gardens along with Forests and National Parks attract a large number of tourists to this area.
The imprisonment led to the arrival of Lord Krishna in order to rescue Aniruddha. A fierce battle was fought between Lord Krishna and Banasura and the entire land was drenched in human blood and hence sonitpur came to be known as Tezpur which means 'the city of blood'.
Located at the bank of the Brahmaputra, Tezpur is a pre – historic city that finds reference even in The Mahabharata.
