Benadryl. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is the strongest and most effective first-generation antihistamine, says Roberto Garcia-Ibáñez, M.D., a board-certified allergist and immunologist at The Allergi Group in Tampa, Florida. It's often administered in the emergency room to treat an allergic reaction, he adds.

But with this acute itching, a different type of cell in the bloodstream transmits itch signals to the nerves. Those cells produce too much of another non-histamine substance that triggers itch; therefore, antihistamines don't work in response to such signals.
There are some potential side effects and there are some cases where long-term antihistamine use can worsen urinary retention or narrow angle glaucoma.
For many people with allergies, symptoms are the worst around 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. Taking an antihistamine at bedtime may help you or your child feel better in the morning during allergy season.
One trial found cetirizine to be more effective than fexofenadine at relieving symptoms in 97 patients with chronic urticaria with 51.9% of participants taking cetirizine reporting themselves as symptom-free after 28 days of treatment compared with only 4.4% of participants taking fexofenadine.
For the relief of the symptoms of hayfever, the usual dosage for adults and children over 12 years of age is one Telfast 120 mg tablet daily when required, or one Telfast 180 mg tablet daily, when required.
