Cysts and boils can look similar, but they are not the same. A boil results from a bacterial infection. It is red and swollen and contains pus, like a pimple. A cyst is under the skin and is usually painless, but it can resemble a boil if it ruptures or becomes infected.
Boils and abscesses are painful collections of pus that are caused by bacterial infections. A cyst may go on to become a boil or abscess.
Put warm, moist, compresses on the boil several times a day to speed draining and healing. Never squeeze a boil or try to cut it open at home. This can spread the infection. Continue to put warm, wet, compresses on the area after the boil opens.
A painful, red bump that starts out small and can enlarge to more than 2 inches (5 centimeters) Reddish or purplish, swollen skin around the bump. An increase in the size of the bump over a few days as it fills with pus. Development of a yellow-white tip that eventually ruptures and allows the pus to drain out.
Soak a washcloth in warm water and then press it gently against the boil for about 10 minutes. You can repeat this a few times throughout the day. Once you see the pus at the center (that's called “bringing a boil to a head,” it'll probably burst and drain soon.
Boils usually heal on their own. If they do not, a doctor may need to lance it in an outpatient procedure. They will apply local anesthesia and then make a small cut in the boil to allow some of the pus to drain out. A boil is a large, red, painful lump on the skin.
Boils may take from 1 to 3 weeks to heal. In most cases, a boil will not heal until it opens and drains. This can take up to a week. A carbuncle often requires treatment by your healthcare provider.
Apply a Warm Compress
After cleaning the cyst, hold a warm compress on the area for five to ten minutes. The moisture and the warmth help to encourage the substance trapped under the skin to make its way out of the hair follicle. Repeat this process up to three times per day until the cyst drains on its own.
A cyst will not heal until it is lanced and drained or surgically excised. Without treatment, cysts will eventually rupture and partially drain. It may take months (or years) for these to progress. Once they rupture, the painful sebaceous cyst will likely return if the pocket lining is not removed entirely.
A boil is a hard and painful lump that fills with pus. Most boils go away on their own.
It is important not to squeeze or pop boils, as this can be very painful and can spread the infection.
Cysts can feel tender to the touch, and a person may be able to move one easily. Tumors can also grow almost anywhere in the body. They tend to grow quickly and are usually firm to the touch. It is possible to have cysts and tumors in the same organ.
Cysts feel like soft blisters when they are close to the skin's surface, but they can feel like hard lumps when they develop deeper beneath the skin. A hard cyst near to the surface of the skin usually contains trapped dead skin cells or proteins.
Infections, tumors, parasites, and injuries can cause cysts. They are usually noncancerous. If a person is worried about a cyst or has noticed a new lump, they should see a doctor for an accurate diagnosis and treatment, if necessary.
If left untreated, benign cysts can cause serious complications including: Infection – the cyst fills with bacteria and pus, and becomes an abscess. If the abscess bursts inside the body, there is a risk of blood poisoning (septicaemia).
It's not advisable to try draining a cyst or abscess yourself. Cyst popping at home can cause infection. Instead, keep the area clean, and make an appointment with a doctor if the area is painful or starts to drain.
Using a warm compress: Once a white spot, or whitehead, forms in the center of the cyst, apply a warm compress. People can make a warm compress by soaking a clean cloth in hot water and gently pressing it to the pimple for 10–15 minutes. Repeat this step 3–4 times per day until the pimple heals.
The best test to determine whether a cyst or tumor is benign or malignant is a biopsy. This procedure involves removing a sample of the affected tissue — or, in some cases, the entire suspicious area — and studying it under a microscope. Karthik Giridhar, M.D.
If left alone, a boil will break and drain on its own over time. In certain cases, a doctor may need to cut into your skin to drain the pus. Once the fluid and pus drain from the boil or carbuncle, it will heal. The doctor may also prescribe antibiotics if there is a serious infection.
Popping or squeezing a boil can allow bacteria to infect deeper layers of the skin, as well as other tissues and organs. This can lead to serious, life-threatening complications. Boils can heal on their own without medical treatment.
