Some Bites are Little Love Bites
They might just gently nip at your skin, generally, not hard enough to draw blood. Your best clue that it's just a little love bite is that your cat may run away or otherwise act like they want to play, but cats can also use love bites to try to communicate with you.
You should see a physician as soon as possible. Most cat bite wounds are small punctures that drive pathogenic bacteria deep into the skin. Left untreated, a serious infection can develop within twenty-four to forty-eight hours.
Some cats may gently nibble or bite their owners as a sign of affection. It is thought to be reminiscent of how a mother cat will groom her kittens with small bites and is more common in cats who have had litters.
Kittens don't know that teeth and claws hurt unless you explain it in kitty language the way a mother would.
You may be taken aback by unexpected behavior like play biting, but don't consider it a sign that your kitty doesn't love you. Cats have unique ways of showing affection, after all, from head-butting to, yes, "love nips." When your furry friend gently nibbles on your finger, that's just fine.
How can cat bites be dangerous? Cat bites can make deep puncture wounds that are hard to clean. The nature of these wounds allows bacteria or other organisms to become trapped deeper in the skin. Due to this, and the fact that cats carry many types of bacteria in their mouths, a bite can lead to infection.
Most experts currently recommend prophylactic antibiotics for the following situations only: bites with a high risk of infection, such as deep punctures caused by cats; wounds that require surgical repair; attacks involving immunocompromised hosts; and bites involving the hands or face (Table 2) (3,16,17).
Rabies prevention
But because human rabies is almost always fatal, any biting pet should be confined for 10 days as an extra precaution.
Most Capnocytophaga infections usually occur with dog or cat bites. But some people who develop a Capnocytophaga infection have not been bitten. People may be infected after close contact with a dog or cat, especially after contact with the animal's saliva (spit).
First, you want to try to flush out as much bacteria as possible and then irrigate the wound with water. Next, wash the wound with mild soap and water. Slow the bleeding with a clean cloth and apply over-the-counter antibiotic cream if you have it. Then, wrap the wound in a sterile bandage.
Unlike aggressive bites, cat love bites typically do not break the skin. Furthermore, while a love bite may seem playful, a real bite has a more violent undertone and may occur quite suddenly.
The time it takes for wounds to heal depends not only on the extent of the damage but also on your overall health. If the bite is infected and appropriate treatment is implemented, the infection will usually heal within 7-10 days.
It's never a good thing when your cat is biting. It's not just painful – it can potentially be dangerous if left unattended. Many cat bites require medical attention and can quickly become infected if left untreated.
It probably feels like your four-legged fur baby has got it in for you, but these perceived acts of aggression are actually an indicator of affection. That can be quite difficult to fathom, right? But it's true; they're actually “love bites” rather than a defense mechanism.
Cats don't feel guilt. They do feel connected to us. And there are certain behaviours that show us they still think of us as part of their social group.
Cats usually bite because they're communicating messages or want you to stop doing something. It's important to understand what your cat is communicating! When cats bite, they're telling you that they aren't enjoying the contact they're receiving.
Unfortunately, cat bite wounds are a very common injury that I treat. It is imperative that your cat be evaluated by a veterinarian and treated with antibiotics immediately. If left untreated, these wounds can result in serious complications and illness.
Cat bites are about twice as likely as dog bites to get infected. While all bites carry bacteria, your body manages to fend off most infections from dog bites.
Dog or cat bites are usually minor. Infections can occur if your skin is broken by an animal bite. If you are bitten and the skin is broken, seek medical advice immediately to avoid developing tetanus.

Cat scratch disease (CSD) is a bacterial infection spread by cats. The disease spreads when an infected cat licks a person's open wound, or bites or scratches a person hard enough to break the surface of the skin.
Conclusions: Cat bite injuries to the hand can progress to serious infection. The treatment of such infections often requires hospitalization, intravenous antibiotic therapy, and operative treatment.
