Lice are most active at night. Head lice are very contagious. Lice are spread by direct contact with someone who is infested or by sharing clothing (eg, hats) with someone who has lice. Female lice attach their eggs firmly to hair.
The most common symptom of pubic lice is itchy red spots. The itching is caused by an allergy to the louse saliva or poo. It can take 1 to 3 weeks for itching to develop after the first infestation, and it'll usually be worse at night.
Body lice feed often and at any time of day or night and typically choose a site where the skin is soft, creased and close to clothing such as the armpit or waistline. The insect bites into the skin and sucks blood.
Once exposed to lice, it may take a while before you notice symptoms. Visual signs of lice may be evident earlier. Adult lice will start laying eggs the moment they infest a host. This is one reason head lice inspections are recommended during school outbreaks.

Lice are only passed to others by close head-to-head contact. Even then the risk is low. Lice are rarely passed to others by sharing caps or combs. Sleepovers and sleeping together only has a small risk.
Kids push their heads together to fit in a phone's viewing field and create a situation ripe for head lice to spread. Sharing headphones, also increasingly popular since kids carry their music with them everywhere, is another way lice can spread. 3. Home remedies are ineffective at best and dangerous at worst.
Head lice do not live on pillows or sheets, as they need to feed on the scalp of a host in order to survive. According to the CDC, lice can only survive for 48 hours after falling from a host scalp.

Signs of Lice

Lice won't go away without treatment. You can treat lice and their eggs with prescription or over-the-counter medicines. After treatment, your skin may still itch for a week or more. This is because of your body's reaction to the lice.
DO NOT over treat. Some louse shampoos can be neurotoxic and overuse can damage the nervous system. Wear gloves when treating more than one person with head louse shampoo. If more than two treatments are required to control an infestation, talk to the School Nurse(s) or the Health Department about alternative methods.
There's no need to wash your child's bedding every day.
Sally's tip is to take a roller lint brush--the kind with tape--and run it thoroughly over the top half of your child's sheet. Her logic: The odds of a louse or nit falling off your child's hair and getting under the pillow and remaining alive is remote.
The head lice may have become resistant to the treatment. If the treatment used does not kill the head lice, your health care provider and pharmacist can help you be sure the treatment was used correctly and may recommend a completely different product if they think the head lice are resistant to the first treatment.
