Religions that believe God has a wife or divine female counterpart include the Latter-day Saint movement (Mormonism), which teaches of a Heavenly Mother, and some traditions within Hinduism, where goddesses (Shakti) are seen as the consorts or energy of male deities like Shiva, while ancient Canaanite religions (influencing early Israelites) worshipped the goddess Asherah as a divine spouse. Another group, the World Mission Society Church of God (WMSCOG), believes in both a Father God and Mother God with a spousal relationship, notes The Oberlin Review.
In the Latter Day Saint movement, Heavenly Mother, also known as Mother in Heaven, is the mother of human spirits and the wife of God the Father. Collectively Heavenly Mother and Father are called Heavenly Parents.
Did God Have a Wife? was intended as a popular work making available to the general public the evidence long known to Biblical archaeologists regarding ancient Israelite religion: namely that the Israelite God of antiquity (before 600 BCE), Yahweh, had a consort, that her name was Asherah, and that she was part of the ...
Canaanite Culture and its Pantheon of Gods:
The Canaanites and Israelites believed the universe was ruled by gods and goddesses and they worshiped them. The popular gods Baal, El, and Asherah and a couple of other female goddesses.
While the Gospels do not include any references to Jesus having a spouse or children, Latter-day Saints claimed scriptural support for a married Messiah in Jesus's interactions with women, most prominently Mary, Martha, and Mary Magdalene.
There are no references in the Gospels to a wife of Jesus. Sometimes it's claimed that the wedding in Cana in John 2 is really Jesus' own wedding. But that's not what the text says, as a careful reading of it makes clear.
Mormons don't officially believe that Jesus was married
In fact, there is no official Church doctrine on this issue. Individual members are free to believe as they wish concerning this matter. (Some believe that He was married; others believe He wasn't. Most members are open to believe either way.)
Summary: Though Ancient Israelites most likely worshiped El, Ba'al (or ba'alim), Asherah (or asherot/asherim), and YHVH, the Torah reshaped the narrative. The Jewish tradition in the Torah combined El and YHVH while alienating and forbidding Ba'al and Asherah.
Michael, also called Archangel Michael or Michael the Taxiarch, is an archangel and the warrior of God in Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.
There is significant debate on whether Asherah was worshipped in ancient Israelite religion. Some scholars argue that Asherah was venerated as Yahweh's consort, while others oppose this arguing that the relevant Hebrew epigraphic evidence actually refers to some cultic place or object rather than a goddess.
The identity of the bride is generally considered within Christian theology to be the church, with Jesus as the bridegroom; Ephesians 5:22–33 in particular compares the union of husband and wife to that of Christ and the church.
If Jesus is God's Son, does that mean God had a wife? God has never had a wife. Calling Jesus God's Son is an expression of His role in relation to God the Father. Unlike us, Jesus was not conceived by two earthly parents; He was born of a virgin through a miraculous work of God.
The most controversial Mormon belief, especially historically, is polygamy (plural marriage), which the main Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) officially ended in 1890 but is still practiced by fundamentalist splinter groups, leading to ongoing public scrutiny and internal divides. Other controversial aspects include early, now-renounced, doctrines like the Adam-God theory, unique temple rituals, and beliefs about God's nature, though these generate less public controversy than polygamy.
Sex before and outside of a monogamous, heterosexual marriage is strictly forbidden by Mormon teachings. LDS teens have the highest rate of self-reported abstention from sexual activity of any US religious group surveyed in 2002 and 2024.
The Book of Mormon establishes clearly that “Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God, manifesting himself to all nations” (Book of Mormon title page; 2 Nephi 26:12). At the heart of the doctrine restored through Joseph Smith is the doctrine of the Christ.
Islam is the religion that follows strict monotheism and the word used to denote it is Tawhid. The entire religious adherence of followers of Islam is centered around the idea of Tawhid.
Christianity, the largest religion in the United States, experienced a 20th-century high of 91% of the total population in 1976. This declined to 73.7% by 2016 and 64% in 2022.
Yahweh was an ancient Semitic deity in the southeastern ancient Levant that became the national god of the Iron Age kingdoms of Israel and Judah.
The Qurʾān also makes reference to the Jews either by name (al-yahūd/hūd) or within the context of the people of the book (ahl al-kitāb).
Asherah, also known as Athirat, Ashratum and Ashertu, is a Semitic goddess, particularly important in Ugarit, where she was the wife of the chief god El.
Latter Day Saints affirm the virgin birth of Jesus but reject the Catholic doctrine of the perpetual virginity of Mary. They also believe that the brothers of Jesus were her and Joseph's biological children. Mary is not seen as an intercessor between humankind and Jesus, and Latter Day Saints do not pray to Mary.
“Mary Magdalene was a woman healed of Jesus Christ. And she was a woman whole in Jesus Christ. As His disciple, she followed the Savior throughout Galilee and ministered to Him. “She was present at the foot of the cross, a witness to His death.
WMSCOG followers believe in a Mother God in addition to the traditional Holy Trinity of Christian doctrine, and they claim that God the Mother and God the Father have a spousal relationship.
