So much so that today, in the Northern Territory, there is one crocodile for every inhabitant! There are about 200,000 Saltwater crocodiles in Australia, mostly in areas around Darwin and the Mary River.
"The Proserpine River has the highest density of crocodiles anywhere in Queensland; it's got five-and-a-half crocodiles per kilometre,” Dr Brien said. “We're doing that to get a better handle on the crocodiles in that system, particularly the big crocodiles.”

Too cold to stay
Regardless of how lone crocodiles end up in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland, experts say crocodile populations never inhabited the regions. Dr Salisbury said any crocodiles that ended up in unusually southern locations, were almost always alone and never stayed for long.

Freshwater crocodiles are only found in Australia, inhabiting the freshwater rivers, lakes and 'billabongs' of northern Australia. Although they can tolerate saltwater, freshies are kept further upstream by the larger saltwater crocodiles.
But are there crocodiles in the Murray River, the longest river in Australia? Mercifully, no. Saltwater crocodiles generally stay above the Tropic of Capricorn, although they have been spotted further south around the Boyne River near Gladstone. The Murray River is way too far south for saltwater crocodiles to go near.

Back in July 1957, Australia's largest known crocodile, 8.64 metres long, was killed with a single shot on the banks of the Norman River by a Polish immigrant Krystina Pawlowski.
