The nation, officially the Russian Federation, which is commonly referred to as Russia, is located partly in Eastern Europe and partly in North Asia; it borders the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Bering Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk in the east.
The name Russia is derived from Rus', a medieval state populated primarily by the East Slavs. However, the proper name became more prominent in later history, and the country typically was called by its inhabitants "Rus land". This state is denoted as Kievan Rus' after its capital city by modern historiography.

Russian Empire (1721–1917)
Ukraine gained independence in 1991 as the Soviet Union dissolved, and declared itself neutral. A new constitution was adopted in 1996. A series of mass demonstrations, known as the Euromaidan, led to the establishment of a new government in 2014 after a revolution.
The Soviet Empire was made up of 15 Soviet Socialist Republics: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belorussia (now Belarus), Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kirgiziya (now Kyrgyzstan), Latvia, Lithuania, Moldavia (now Moldova), Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
Since mid-March 2022, the "Z" began to be used by the Russian government as a pro-war propaganda motif, and has been appropriated by pro-Putin civilians as a symbol of support for Russia's invasion.
There are two Russian words which are commonly translated into English as "Russians". One is "русские" (russkie), which in modern Russia most often means "ethnic Russians". Another is "россияне" (rossiyane), which denotes "Russian citizens", regardless of ethnicity or religious affiliation.
"No Russian" begins with the player in an elevator with Makarov and three other gunmen. Makarov tells the group "Remember, no Russian" – an instruction to only speak English in order to frame the attack as being committed by Americans; the group also uses American weaponry.
Russian Alaska was the name given to Russian owned lands in North America during the years 1780-1867. Debates over who first discovered the land have been integral to the politics of Russian Alaska since its settlement. The first Russian settlements are most often dated to the seventeenth century.
The three-letter code ROC stands for Russian Olympic Committee, whose flag will be used — including a stylized Russian tricolor emblem — and the team will wear national colors.
Military experts interpreted the “Z” as “Za pobedy,” Russian for “for victory,” or as “Zapad,” for “West.” Some dubbed vehicles painted with the symbol the “Zorro Squad,” while others suggested the “Z” might stand for the Kremlin's self-styled “target number one,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Other reports have said that the symbols are a way of denoting the origins of the forces - for example, some have said that the "Z" denotes forces from Russia's eastern district, while the "Z" inside a square seen on other Russian vehicles means the forces are from Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.
The United Socialist Soviet Republic, or U.S.S.R. , was made up of 15 republics: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

The first modern state in Russia was founded in 862 by King Rurik of the Rus, who was made the ruler of Novgorod. Some years later, the Rus conquered the city of Kiev and started the kingdom of the Kievan Rus.
It was divided in the Partitions of Poland in the late 18th century. Much of its land was taken by the Russian Empire. For most of the history of the Russian Empire, eastern Poland was held by Russia and western Poland by Prussia, which went on to found the German Empire in the late 19th century.
Finland as a part of the Russian Empire 1809–1917
Most of the laws from the time of the Swedish rule remained in force. During the Russian rule, Finland became a special region developed by order of the Emperor. For example, Helsinki city centre was built during Russian rule.
Technically, Russia is banned from competing in the Olympics. But like the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Russian athletes are still participating at the 2022 Winter Olympics. That's because they are competing under the banner of the Russian Olympic Committee, or ROC for short.
On 13 August 1992, it was officially named the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC). Full and final recognition of ROC as a legal successor of the Soviet Olympic Committee by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was received at the 101st Session of the IOC in September 1992.
ROC stands for Russian Olympic Committee. Russian athletes are competing under the ROC banner as neutral athletes, not on behalf of Russia. There are 204 Russian athletes competing in the 2022 Winter Olympics under the ROC.
Russia offered to sell Alaska to the United States in 1859, believing the United States would off-set the designs of Russia's greatest rival in the Pacific, Great Britain.
On March 30, 1867, the United States reached an agreement to purchase Alaska from Russia for a price of $7.2 million. The Treaty with Russia was negotiated and signed by Secretary of State William Seward and Russian Minister to the United States Edouard de Stoeckl.
