There isn't one single "deepest sin" universally agreed upon, as it varies by belief system, but pride (inordinate self-love) is often cited in Christianity as the root of all sin, stemming from Satan's rebellion, while other faiths highlight severe acts like unpardonable blasphemy (Holy Spirit), violence (Hinsa in Hinduism), or rejecting evidence-based truth (Huxley's view). Ultimately, the "deepest" sin often relates to turning away from God or truth, leading to other transgressions like envy, anger, and greed.
In order of increasing severity according to Pope Gregory I, the seven deadly sins are as follows:
With this declaration, Alma identified for Corianton the three most abominable sins in the sight of God: (1) denying the Holy Ghost, (2) shedding innocent blood, and (3) committing sexual sin. Adultery was third to murder and the sin against the Holy Ghost as abominable sins.
Jesus Christ called the Holy Spirit "Spirit of Truth" (John 14:17; 15:26; John 16:13) and warned us, "All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men; but the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit shall not be forgiven unto men" (Matthew 12:31).
Reserved Sins?
Saying offensive things about God or religion is blasphemy. Blasphemy can be used for offensive ideas in other areas too. If you're saying something bad about a god, or taking the Lord's name in vain, or questioning a religious institution in any way, you could be accused of blasphemy — insulting something sacred.
We feel anew God's love for us as His children—and our Savior's love for us.” When we feel God's love as we repent, we can know that we have been forgiven and that our Heavenly Father wants us to stay close by His side.
These seven sins—idolatry, fornication, adultery, homosexuality, dishonesty, drunkenness, and foul language—can lead us away from God and prevent us from entering heaven. But there is hope. Repentance and turning away from these sins are key to restoring our relationship with God.
The seven sins are pride, greed, lust, gluttony, envy, sloth, and wrath. The theory here is that most of the sins that you're engaged with on a daily basis have their roots in one of these seven big sins. If you can focus on those seven things, your life will be much, much holier.
10 sins that often slip by as “OK” in our daily life:
In section twelve of the letter, Pope Francis announces that all priests, not just bishops, now have the ability to forgive individuals who have committed the sin of abortion. Pope Francis stated that there is no sin that God's mercy cannot reach and wipe away if a repentant heart seeks reconciliation.
It is this: If God's eternal purpose is to save sinners and He is able to save even the worst of them, then He can save you! In fact, the knowledge of your sinfulness is the ticket you need to come to Christ for salvation. He has never saved anyone but sinners—not one time!
Act of Contrition (alternate form)
My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.
Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is not just a one time act. It means continuing to reject God's offer of salvation until you die and it's too late. You can still get into heaven if you ask God for forgiveness and turn your heart to Christ.
Being tempted with thoughts of lust or thoughts to blaspheme the Spirit of God, does not mean that you've actually committed these sins. Committing this sin is different from simply falling prey to the weight of these overwhelming thoughts.
The unforgivable sin isn't something you stumble into accidentally. It's the settled, defiant rejection of the Spirit's witness to Christ. If your sin grieves you and you desire His mercy, that itself is evidence that the Spirit is still at work in you.
