The characters of The Originals went face to face with multiple threats during the show's five seasons, but they always managed to come out victorious.
If you don't know the name “Klaus Mikaelson” you've never watched Vampire Diaries before. He is a character that began on the CW show Vampire Diaries, which was based on a popular vampire book series. This character is known for being in the line of the Original Vampires.

The real curse was the hybrid curse: a curse placed on Klaus, an original vampire, to keep his werewolf side dormant. To break the curse, Klaus needed to sacrifice a werewolf, a vampire, and a doppelgänger, aka Elena. Thanks to some clever plot maneuvering, Elena lived to see another day after the curse was broken.
Together, they stand, and Klaus tells Elijah, "I don't deserve the love you've given me, brother. But I am so grateful." Elijah responds, "It's been a glorious ride, NiKlaus. And my greatest honor." The series then ends as the brothers stake each other and turn to bask in the New Orleans night.
But there are cases where a vamp is just bad news, and Niklaus Mikaelson is one of those. He's a Sociopath. Okay, that's not technically what we call it, but you still need to cross the street when you see him coming. Antisocial Personality Disorder is no joking matter.
From there on, Klaus displays a genuine affection for Caroline, and his attraction and feelings for her continued to grow as the series went on. Klaus wanted to show her the world and believes that one day, she'll let him do so.
Even though Klaus will go down as one of the most powerful vampires in television history, there are plenty of TV vampires from other TV shows (and some from his own) that are stronger than the Original Vampire. Hope Mikaelson ended up being one of the most powerful supernatural beings in the Tvd universe.

When he said that, the last (or so they believed) White Oak Stake had been destroyed, so for all they knew at the time he really couldn't be killed. And you can't take off an Original's head or heart, their bodies are indestructible.
