The Detachment Executive Officer (XO) is the second in command and directs the Staff Officers in the BC's guidance. The XO assumes command and commander responsibilities in the Battalion Commanders absence.

The Corporal rank is a chevron with two stripes. In addition to their supervisory responsibilities, Corporals also perform functions such as patrol and investigations. Corporals typically act as the supervisor in the Sergeant's absence.
In Australia apparently 'x' is a kiss while 'o' is a hug. That being said when I asked my Australian colleague if she thought “xx” or “xo” was more taboo she had difficulty choosing.
It's pretty common knowledge that XOXO means "hugs and kisses." As Dictionary.com defines it, the phrase is generally thought of as a "lighthearted way of expressing affection, sincerity, or deep friendship." The X represents a kiss, while the O represents a hug.
A Medical Doctor could find a Commanding Officer medically unfit to command and thus he would be relieved and the Executive Officer would take command. But most ships do not have a doctor aboard.
