A "sharktopus" refers to a real, but extremely rare, natural phenomenon where an octopus, specifically a Maori octopus, was filmed hitchhiking on the back of a fast-moving shortfin mako shark near New Zealand, captured by scientists who coined the term for the viral footage. While the term can also describe fictional shark-octopus hybrids in movies, the real-life event shows a surprising example of an animal using a predator for transportation, a behavior known as phoresy, though scientists are still unsure of the exact reason.
Rare footage captured by scientists in New Zealand in 2023 shows an octopus riding on the back of a shark. In a recently released study, scientists say they still aren't sure how the deep sea-dwelling Maori octopus encountered the mako shark near the waters surface.
Description. It is described as a giant octopus, a giant cuttlefish, or a half shark, half octopus. The lusca is said to grow over 75 ft (23 m) long, but no cases have been proven of octopus species growing up to even half these lengths.
Description. Genetically-engineered monsters, the Sharktopus were created by the United States military as organic weapons. Their front half is that of a Great White shark, whilst the rear end is composed of the eight tentacles of an octopus, and the combination of these traits makes them deadly opponents.
Written by Boise Esquerra and directed by Adrian Grünberg, The Black Demon is a horror thriller based on a true Mexican legend of El Demonio Negro, a monstrous shark-like creature that reaches lengths of over 50ft with a killer instinct.
Cecaelia – Half-human, half-octopus. The term was coined by fans in the late 2000s to describe characters such as Ursula from The Little Mermaid and may also apply to Harry Styles in the music video of "Music for a Sushi Restaurant".
The Great White Shark is considered the "#1 deadliest" due to having the most recorded unprovoked attacks and fatalities, followed closely by the Tiger Shark and Bull Shark, which are also highly dangerous due to their presence in coastal areas and opportunistic feeding habits. While Great Whites are powerful apex predators, Bull Sharks are known for their aggression and ability to live in both saltwater and freshwater, making encounters more likely.
Sometimes an octopus bite can be serious…
In reality, all octopus bites have the potential to be dangerous, because octopuses are venomous animals, and their bites contain toxins that can irritate or complicate a bite wound. The chance of an infection or allergic reaction is also always a risk.
Octopuses are aliens — or, at least, so vastly different in their genetic makeup that they might as well be considered out of this world.
as unclean (verse 27). He tells us that salt- and freshwater fish with fins and scales may be eaten (verses 9-12), but water creatures without those characteristics (catfish, lobsters, oysters, shrimp, crabs, clams, mussels, squid, frogs, octopi, etc.)
Sea monsters are in every culture yet Umi-Bozu, or “Sea Monk,” from Japan is among the most unsettling. This spectral giant is said to resemble a monk's shaven cap, appearing on the water's surface as a massive shadow with a round head.
The informally named Casper octopus species were first observed in 2016 in the Pacific Ocean, in waters off Hawaii. Also known as the “ghost octopus”, the animals have been spotted off the coast of Ecuador and recently in Argentina as well. This species is also known from the Nazca Ridge.
The last megalodon likely died around 3.6 million years ago due to a combination of factors, primarily a collapse of its food supply (large whales) caused by global cooling, which also destroyed its warm, shallow nursery habitats, and increased competition from faster, more agile predators like early great white sharks and orcas, creating a "perfect storm" of environmental stress and resource scarcity that led to its extinction.
Lemon sharks are found in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, from Virginia to southern Brazil, as well as parts of the Pacific. These sharks prefer a defined home range and are often seen aggregating together.
A diver in south Australia captured stunning underwater footage of what's being called "the world's most beaten up shark." The 10-foot long Great White was covered nose to tail with scars.
Contrary to popular belief, ink sac secretions are non-poisonous to humans. They are often mistaken for venomous glands, but that is a completely different organ in the octopus. That said, some species, such as the blue-ringed octopus, produce extremely lethal toxins than can kill a human with a single bite.
Some species, like the *blue-ringed octopus*, carry venom so lethal it can paralyze and kill a human in minutes—even though they look small and harmless. Others can deliver painful bites with their sharp beaks, which are strong enough to break skin and inject bacteria that can cause severe infections.
The secret to this lies in the presence of opsin (light detecting protein) in the skin. Its thought that its possible for some cephalopods to sense how much ambient light is present across their periphery and adjust their skin colour and brightness accordingly.
Meet the leopard shark aka the friendliest shark in the sea. The leopard shark poses virtually no danger to humans and often seeks out human interaction.
The shark feeds on fish and other marine prey such as octopi. However, hammerheads are extremely shy, and do not attack humans unless provoked or if they mistake one for an injured seal. There has been only one confirmed instance of a hammerhead killing a human.
#1 Most Scary Shark: Megalodon
Megalodon was the king of all sharks, a giant that could swallow a great white in one bite. At more than 50 feet long, it ruled the seas millions of years ago. It's extinct today, but the thought of a megalodon lurking in the deep is enough to give even the bravest diver nightmares.
