When wearing the uniform or in a duty status, hairstyles/haircuts will have hair off the ears and above the collar. Hair will be no more than 2 inches in bulk, 4 inches in length and not to extend below the eyebrows when headgear is removed or show underneath when headwear is worn.
If your bangs are grown out, they must be long enough to be tied into a bun. Navy gals, you will get your hair cut so that it meets the preceding standards at all times. You can let your hair grow back after basic training, as long as you continue to wear it in such a way that you meet the standards while in uniform.
Military Buzz Cut
The buzz cut is the standard military haircut, as seen in movies like Jarhead, and comes in many different shapes and names, with cuts like the burr cut and butch cut also in the buzz cut category. But ultimately the difference with these cuts is the length on the sides and top.
Hair shall be no longer than four inches and may not touch the ears, collar, extend below eyebrows when headgear is removed, show under front edge of headgear, or interfere with properly wearing military headgear. The bulk of the hair shall not exceed approximately two inches.
The whole head of hair is cut with clippers, without a guard, leaving the head with just stubble and a shaved look. There are practical and traditional reasons for why they give this haircut in the military, though this applies to just males who are potential enlistees or cadets during their respective basic trainings.
- Layered hairstyles are authorized, provided that the layers present a smooth graduated appearance. No portion of the bulk of the hair (except the bun) as measured from the scalp will exceed 2 inches.
Sailors must have hair above the ears and at the nape of the neck tapered from the hairline upward at least ¾ inch. Hair cannot touch the ears, eyebrows, or collar and cannot be longer than four inches.

While you're in you WILL get your hair cut at least once every 2 weeks.
The main obstacle to beards in the sea service is the Navy's assertion, based on Naval Safety Center studies, that facial hair would obstruct the formation of an air-tight seal when sailors must wear face masks.
The jellyfish haircut sports disconnected layers that resemble a short bob with longer layers underneath. If the name is any giveaway, it truly resembles the round body and longer, billowy tentacles of a jellyfish.

Growing a beard in the military
Beards were prohibited across all branches for two reasons: Hygiene and the need for a good seal while wearing a gas mask.
Hair should be no longer than 4.0 inches. Hair may not touch the ears or collar. It also cannot extend below the eyebrows. Hair bulk cannot be more than 2.0 inches.
Male Sailors with an approved modified shaving regimen in line with BUPERSINST 1000.22 or an approved religious accommodation to wear a beard in line with BUPERSINST 1730.11 are authorized to optionally edge (outline or shape) the outer edges of their beards on the face and neck.
One earring per ear (centered on earlobe) may be worn while in uniform. Earrings shall be 4mm - 6mm ball (approximately 1/8 - 1/4 inch), plain with shiny or brushed matte finish, screw-on or with posts.
Do you share a shower in the military? There's no way out of communal showers. They're required. Everyone in your barracks will enter the shower room assigned to your barracks when commanded.
Nail polish is authorized, but only using colors that the Navy calls “conservative and inconspicuous.” Wearing “white, black, red, yellow, orange, green, purple, grey, glitter, striped or any sort of pattern/decorative nail polish” is not allowed. The long-championed color of blue remains unaddressed.
Tints and highlights shall result in natural hair colors and be similar to the base color of the hair. Hairstyles must not interfere with the proper wear of any uniform headgear.
