Implanon NXT should be removed or replaced no later than three years after insertion. Failure to do so may increase your risk of ectopic pregnancy.
Once implanted, the implants gradually release hormones into the body creating a contraceptive effect that can last up to 5 years. When it expires if you do not remove the implant, the effectiveness of contraception will decrease and your chances of unwanted pregnancy are very high.
If the implant is not removed, then the effects of NEXPLANON will continue for a longer period of time. Other problems related to insertion and removal include pain, irritation, swelling, bruising, numbness and tingling, scarring, infection, injury to the nerves or blood vessels, and breaking of the implant.
Nexplanon remains effective for three to four years. You will want to keep track of the scheduled removal date and make an appointment with your doctor to remove it just before the expiration date. Once it expires, it no longer protects against pregnancy.
If you do not want to become pregnant and the implant has been in for more than 3 years, you can abstain from sex or use condoms until you can have it replaced. If you have unprotected sex and your implant has been in for more than 3 years, you might need emergency contraception.
Some women gain weight while using the implant and lose weight when it's removed, while others might experience the opposite effect.
It protects you from pregnancy all day, every day for up to 5 years. If you decide you want to get pregnant, a nurse or doctor can take it out and you can get pregnant right away. The implant doesn't protect you from STDs, so use condoms along with the implant to help protect you from both pregnancy and STDs.
Is it safe to leave my implant or IUD in place after it has expired? It is safe for your expired device to be left until you are able to get into services again. The only risk is of an unintended pregnancy so make sure you use additional precautions such as condoms or contraceptive pills to provide protection.
*NEXPLANON must be removed by the end of the third year. Removal of NEXPLANON involves a minor surgical procedure by your healthcare provider and can be performed in the office through a small incision in your arm where NEXPLANON is located.
But the implants in the study, Implanon and Nexplanon, and the IUD, Mirena, have all given reliable contraceptive performance in the study for a further year. In this initial analysis, none of the 237 women continuing to rely on implants has become pregnant beyond the remove-by date.
How long does it last? It is effective as a contraceptive for 3 years. The implant should be taken out and replaced with a new implant every 3 years. It can be removed earlier than 3 years if it is no longer wanted.
Medical professionals are trained to locate the implant using palpation, X-rays, ultrasound scanning, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and other medical devices. Home removal is not safe. Performing a surgical procedure in a non-medical environment creates greater risk of infection.

In clinical trials, pregnancies were observed to occur as early as 7 to 14 days after removal. In clinical trials with the non-radiopaque etonogestrel implant (IMPLANON®), the etonogestrel levels in blood decreased below sensitivity of the assay by one week after removal of the implant.
IMPLANON™ is a long-acting (up to 3 years), reversible, contraceptive method. IMPLANON™ must be removed by the end of the third year and may be replaced by a new IMPLANON™ at the time of removal, if continued contraceptive protection is desired.
Nexplanon works for 5 years, and a nurse or doctor must remove it once it expires. You can also get your implant taken out any time before then if you want to get pregnant or stop using it.

Implants such as Nexplanon and shots such as Depo Provera are considered long acting, with the implant lasting up to three years and the shot three months. These methods, which can also be used to help control heavy, painful, or irregular periods, should not affect long-term fertility.
Does the contraceptive implant affect fertility? The short answer: The contraceptive implant (Implanon NXT®) does not affect long-term future fertility. The long answer: The hormonal contraceptive implant, Implanon, is a small plastic rod inserted into the upper arm that remains effective for three years.
Implanon vs Mirena
Mirena is designed to last for two years longer than Implanon, with a five-year lifespan. Mirena is also offered as treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), whereas Implanon is purely a contraceptive treatment.
The implant should be removed or replaced at three years. If replacement occurs at or prior to the expiry date, there is no need for additional contraceptive precautions.
A small cut (incision) of around 2-3 mm is made and the Implanon is removed with a pair of surgical tweezers. If the area has been properly anesthetised you should not feel anything other than a little pulling and tension.
