Most importantly, the quality of the bowel cleanout in these studies was identical whether patients ate or not. A more recent study, presented at Digestive Diseases Week (the major GI society meeting) in May, suggested that eating the day before a colonoscopy may actually improve the quality of the bowel cleanout.
It is important to follow all of the instructions provided by our office to ensure a successful exam, however, if you accidentally ate something the day before your procedure before 12:00 PM, you do not need to reschedule as long as you begin the clear liquid diet and follow the rest of the instructions to prepare for ...
You can eat solid foods the day before you undergo the procedure! That's right. You don't have to starve yourself by consuming only clear fluids like broth and Popsicles (and not even cherry-flavored, because they're the color of, well, you know) to prepare for a colonoscopy.
Beginning one full day (24 hours) before your procedure, you must begin a clear liquid diet, which means that you should NOT eat any solid foods and should ONLY drink clear liquids.
In the American Society of Gastroenterology guidelines, a fluid diet was recommended 3–4 days prior for bowel preparation, whereas in the Gastroenterology Society in Cleveland guidelines, patients are allowed one last meal of solid foods up until 24 hours prior to the colonoscopy.
What if I've taken all my preparation and am still passing solid stool on the day of my exam? In this case, your procedure will need to be rescheduled. You may be prescribed a different preparation for your next procedure. Please call the triage nurse to reschedule your procedure with a different preparation.
Fast for 24 hours. As discussed above, you should stop eating solid foods a full day before the procedure. Stick to only clear liquids.
If your procedure is scheduled for 2 p.m., you should not eat any solid food after midnight the night before but can have clear liquids until 9 a.m. of the day of the procedure.
How can you tell if your colon is clean and ready for a colonoscopy? Your stool after finishing your bowel prep agent can act as a guide. Your stool should be clear, yellow, light and liquid. The presence of dark particles or thick brown or black stool means you are not ready for colonoscopy.
One day before your colonoscopy
☐ Eat breakfast — clear liquids only, no solid food. ☐ Eat lunch — clear liquids only, no solid food. ☐ Eat dinner — clear liquids only, no solid food. ☐ Take your bowel prep in the evening as instructed.
Will I be up all night with colonoscopy prep? Probably not, if you start on time. While everyone's body is different, most people are able to complete their round of purging before going to sleep for the night.
NOTHING TO EAT OR DRINK AFTER MIDNIGHT, UNTIL AFTER THE PROCEDURE. DAY OF PROCEDURE: You may take important medicines, like heart medicines, blood pressure medicine, etc. with a small sip of water.
Q: Why can't I eat popcorn 5 days before my procedure? A: The hulls from popcorn can stay in the colon for days. During your procedure the hulls can appear to be growths in the colon. Popcorn hulls also clog the scope.
You want your stool to be clear. After drinking all of your prep, your bowel movements should be all liquid yellow and clear like picture #4 or #5. If so, you are ready and good to go!
DAY OF COLONOSCOPY

Can I shower, eat breakfast, or brush my teeth the morning of my colonoscopy? You may not eat anything the morning of your procedure, but you may continue to drink clear liquids up until 2 hours before your procedure. You may shower and brush your teeth.
It is still important to continue drinking your prep until it is completely gone even if your stool has become clear.
Keep in mind that there is no such thing as a truly empty bowel, as new stool is constantly being produced. In terms of the fear of future diarrhea episodes, remember that it is easier for the muscles of the anus to contain stool that is firm than watery stool that isn't ready to pass yet.
Allowed Clear Liquids
Just a few ideas to survive your colonoscopy prep diet! Remember to avoid red, purple, and blue versions of these clear liquids. Apple juice, white grape juice. Plain gelatin (no fruit or marshmallows added).
Studies have indicated that colonoscopies done during the morning hours have actually contributed to more accurate findings due to a number of varying factors. Although it might not be a thrill to wake up earlier than usual, it could just help your overall health.
Nothing to eat or drink, including water, after midnight until after the procedure unless instructed otherwise.
Gatorade® (No red colored flavors) Regular Gatorade®, Gatorade G2®, Powerade®, Powerade Zero®, Pedialyte or Propel® are acceptable. Red flavors are not allowed; all other colors (yellow, green, orange, purple, blue) are okay.
You can still have smooth soups with no bits (e.g. tomato, vegetable Bouillon), jelly, ice cream, Ambrosia custard, Complan drinks, Bovril and Oxo drinks, and water, clear juices, fizzy drinks, coffee and tea.
After the colonoscopy is completed, you'll move to a recovery area where you'll remain for about 30 to 45 minutes while you fully wake up from your sedation. Nurses will make sure your vital signs are stable and monitor you until the sedation wears off.
You will experience increased flatulence (bowel gas), until your colon returns to its normal state (24 hours). Walking can help rid the gas. You may experience loose stool or no stool for up to three days following the procedure.
