In the most serious cases of canine dehydration, the severe shortage of fluids can even lead to kidney and other organ failure and to death.
Without water, your dog's body will not function properly. More specifically, your dog will dehydrate. This can happen if your dog isn't getting enough water, which is why you should clean and refill your dog's water bowl daily.
The short answer is that dogs can survive between 48 and 72 hours without drinking, but that doesn't really capture the whole picture. Survival is a minimum and a dog allowed to drink only once every 2 days would be the subject of cruel abuse.
It's best to remove your puppy's water bowl at night. Be consistent with the time you remove water, the same way you're consistent with feeding times. As a rule of thumb, remove the food and water bowls about two-to-three hours before bedtime.
Limit Refills: You can still leave water out in a bowl for your dog but you need to ration it during the day. Maybe only fill the bowl half or a quarter of the way each time. This means increased refills throughout the day so they have steady access to water, but a reduced amount.

“If the pet has no health issues, water can be picked up at 8 p.m. to limit drinking right before bed,” she says. However, dogs that have an underlying medical condition, such as heart disease or diabetes mellitus, should never have their water restricted, Riehl says.
How Long Does Dehydration Last in Dogs? Your pet can survive without drinking water for about 72 hours (three days). However, it'll show signs of dehydration after the first 24 hours. Go beyond that and your furry friend will slowly feel weaker and weaker.
Your dog and cat need fresh, clean water every day. In extreme heat (above 80 degrees) they need water available more frequently and in larger amounts.
A general rule of thumb for determining the amount of water a dog should drink daily is 1 ounce (1/8 of a cup) of fluids per pound of body weight. For example, a 10-pound dog should drink approximately 10 fluid ounces per day, while a 100-pound dog should drink roughly 100 fluid ounces in a day.
Tap water contains traces of chlorine, salts, and other chemicals used in the filtration process. While these additives are negligible for humans, they may cause problems for your dog. Tap water is generally safe to drink in small amounts, but there are better options for your pooch to hydrate itself.

It also regulates body temperature, lubricates joints, improves cognitive function, and cushions the brain and spinal cord.
Bladder infections or urinary tract infections are two major culprits of reduced thirst. It could also be diabetes or kidney disease. If you notice other symptoms like lethargy and lack of appetite, and feel like something might be wrong, it's important to call your veterinarian and discuss what's going on.
In the early stages of dehydration, your dog is likely to exhibit visible symptoms such as being apprehensive or acting noticeably tired. He or she may pant excessively which can actually cause additional fluid loss. Sunken eyes, dry noses, and dry gums are also possible.
Do puppies need water at night? Unless your puppy is unwell or suffering from a medical condition, you should avoid leaving water out for them at night. Most puppies over the age of 12 weeks can go without water for 8 hours, but it's inevitable that you may wake up to a mess every now and then.
A slight decrease in water consumption due to reduced activity is no cause for alarm. However, consult a vet if your dog persistently refuses to drink. Dogs should never go more than a day without water.
If your dog drinks too much water at once, it can cause more vomiting/regurgitation. If the gastrointestinal signs are frequent, severe, or persistent, seek veterinary care.
How much water should my dog or cat drink? Textbooks define normal water intake as 1-2ml per kilogram of bodyweight per hour (equivalent to approximately 25-50ml/kg/24hrs). For example, a 10kg dog, like a Westie, would be expected to drink approximately 480ml (just under a pint) in 24 hours.

If your pooch is mildly dehydrated provide your pet with small amounts of water to drink every few minutes or offer your dog pieces of ice to lick. To help restore your dog's electrolyte balance you could also provide your pup with Ringer's lactate (an electrolyte replacement fluid).
What to feed a sick dog? You should hold back giving water to a sick dog for two hours and food until 6-8 hours after their last episode of vomiting.
Generally speaking, dogs will take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to urinate after drinking water. Some may go as quickly as 15 minutes while others may need up to two hours.
Your dog will urinate more water than solid waste when it is dehydrated. When your pet dogs don't drink enough water, they can experience a dry mouth, feel thirsty, have a very slow heart rate, and even get fatigued.
