While her powers didn't activate at school, Tyler's mother was triggered into a Hyde by post-natal depression from Tyler's birth. The family covered for her, saying it was bipolar disorder, to prevent the judgement of small town Jericho.
Unbeknownst to him, Laurel was the presumed dead daughter of the outcast hating Gates Family, who kept tabs on all the monsters of Jericho, including Tyler's own mother.

After his birth, his mother, Francoise, went through postpartum depression, which then led to her Hyde being unlocked. His mother died at some point afterwards.
The reveal
By Wednesday's finale, we learn that the duo behind the monster terrorizing Nevermore were in fact Ms. Thornhill (Ricci) and Tyler (Hunter Doohan).
In Episode 8, “A Murder of Woes,” Tyler tells Wednesday that he had slowly become aware of his monstrous side and that he's been willingly going along with Laurel Gates' (Christina Ricci) plans.

When the sheriff develops a picture of the Hyde at the end of episode 3, he is not shocked by the image of the monster — he knows it well. He recognizes what the Hyde looks like because his wife was a Hyde. From that moment on, he realizes that his son is behind the latest batch of murders he is investigating.
Wednesday decided that Tyler would be the perfect date to the Nevermore dance, even though she briefly talked about going to the dance with Xavier. Her kiss with Tyler is what brought their relationship to an end because it was at that moment that she caught a clear vision of him turning into Hyde.
It turns out that Miss Thornhill, the science teacher, has been manipulating Tyler all along! Just like Dr. Jekyll, she used a chemical concoction to awaken Tyler's powers, all so she could take revenge against the outcasts of the school!
Laurel Gates, known by her alias Marilyn Thornhill, is the main antagonist of the first season of the 2022 Netflix TV show Wednesday. She and her family were the descendants of early 17th-century Pilgrims and Jericho founder Joseph Crackstone and were born into great wealth.
The Sheriff is ashamed of this secret and has always tried his best to protect his son from the consequences of this truth. Tyler is a Hyde monster because also his mother was so. He has it in his genes. And after a while, he became aware of it, remembering what he did when he transformed into the monster.

Thornhill is actually Laurel Gates, a.k.a, the Hyde Master. It turns out that she was giving Tyler (Hunter Doohan) (who was revealed to be the Hyde) strict instructions to keep Wednesday alive since she was the key to resurrecting Joseph Crackstone (William Houston).
Rather than help her, they instead report her to Principal Weems. But Tyler was definitely a murderous psychopath, and even confesses to Wednesday when he thinks he's beaten her. However, Hydes need to be unlocked by a “master”, so he was somewhat under the control of someone with their own agenda against Nevermore.
She got the job at Nevermore, used a plant-derived chemical to unlock Tyler's Hyde, and manipulated him by revealing the truth about his mother. At first she locked him up in the cave and used the chemical to turn him, but eventually he became conscious of his attacks and began working with her willingly.
Christina Ricci's character Marilyn Thornhill is actually Laurel Gates. She has been controlling Tyler the Hyde monster and collecting body parts in order to resurrect her ancestor, Joseph Crackstone.
Thornhill was the real Laurel, not Kinbott, and she used a plant-based serum to get Tyler, whom she took a liking to, on her side and groom him.
This is where our suspicions that Laurel Gates texted Wednesday stem from. Given that she wasn't able to carry out her mission of killing Wednesday at the end of Season 1, if Gates did survive the bee and foot attack, the character has more than enough motive to complete her quest of murdering Wednesday.
