The loaf, or Sphinx, is one of the most adorable ways cats sleep. In this position, a cat sits upright with their front paws tucked under their body, resembling a loaf of bread. When a cat drifts off in this position, it means they're content. It also helps them retain body heat.
The cat loaf
Also known as the sphinx, this position is when cats lie on their front with their front paws underneath them. It's unlikely that they'll fully go to sleep in this position, instead they'll simply relax. It's almost like your cat is meditating and they can stay like this for long periods.
Cats do this when they are feeling safe and comfortable—if they're sitting like this, they probably think that they don't need to use their claws anytime soon!
A cat sploot is common in times when your cat is aiming to cool off their body temperature. So not only does this adorable position work to relax them, but it also serves as a technique to cool off their body and regulate their internal temperature.
The Superman
For the most part, this sleep position shows that your cat is extremely comfortable and probably in a deep state of sleep. The Superman position also protects vulnerable organs by keeping them covered and out of sight.
Sleeping near you
If your kitty likes to sleep near you - or even on you - this is an indication that they have total trust in you.
If your cat sleeps on your bed, he may choose a position that lets him see out your bedroom door more easily. If he's curled up in a ball under your bed or in a quiet corner, then he may be hiding. Cats who sleep under the covers might love being close to you, or they might be hiding to feel safer.
If your cat's staring at you whilst also in a crouched position with their tail tucked in, it's generally a sign that your cat's frightened. You may also find them hiding somewhere like underneath a coffee table or bed and when they stare at you like this it's because they're keeping an eye on the potential 'danger'.
What does feline hyperactivity look like? An over-active cat can exhibit all kinds of nervous behaviours. Running around the house, jumping between furniture, chasing humans and other pets, attracting attention through mewing and hitting, and even compulsive licking.
By tucking themselves into a neat little loaf, cats may be better able to maintain a comfortable body temperature without moving. According to Delgado, it's also possible your cat may be trying to indicate discomfort if they're loafing. "A cat who is still perched on their paws may be in pain," Delgado says.
A cat who chooses to sleep on or close to you is showing their love and trust in you. Even if they choose to lie just out of reach for petting, this means that they feel safe and trust that you will protect them, or they will protect you if danger appears. Cats show love in many ways.
Infectious diseases such as rabies can cause cats to press their head against a wall. Fungal and parasitic infections can also be the problem. If you see your cat doing this, it is best to take them to the vet right away.

It probably feels like your four-legged fur baby has got it in for you, but these perceived acts of aggression are actually an indicator of affection. That can be quite difficult to fathom, right? But it's true; they're actually “love bites” rather than a defense mechanism.
As well as being a method of communication, staring is also a sign of a close bond between you and your cat, as they are unlikely to hold eye contact with someone they don't like or trust.
"It's been my experience that cats who feel very close and comfortable with their person will cuddle up to that person's head during sleep," she explains. "Therefore, I suppose you could take it as a compliment."
