Breeds specifically developed from wolf crosses, like the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog and Saarloos Wolfdog, have the most wolf DNA (up to 40%), while among older, ancient breeds, Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, Shiba Inus, and Akitas retain significant wolf-like genetics, with Shih Tzus surprisingly ranking high for ancient lineages, even though large working breeds and hounds often show higher percentages.
Huskies, as a group, share the most wolf DNA and are believed to have evolved from a specific type of prehistoric wolf species that died off between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago. The Husky is considered to be about 25% wolf, making it one of the closest to wolves.
Almost two-thirds of breed dogs have wolf ancestry within their nuclear genome from admixture that occurred nearly a thousand generations ago, and all analyzed free-ranging dog genomes carry some ancient wolf ancestry. Wolf ancestry correlates with traits like size, function, and personality characteristics.
Yet, several breeds, including the Shiba Inu, Akita, Alaskan Malamute, Siberian Husky, and Chow Chow, remain genetically closer to wolves than others. Because of this, they are often grouped together as the so-called ancient breeds.
A new genetic study reveals that even the smallest dog breeds still carry traces of their wild origins, with Chihuahuas showing around 0.2 percent wolf DNA. After analyzing thousands of dog genomes, researchers found that more than 60 percent of breeds retain some level of wolf ancestry.
But for a clear understanding of how closely they are related, scientists compare their DNA, an essential molecule that's the instruction manual for building each species. Humans and chimps share a surprising 98.8 percent of their DNA.
Genetic research from the Stanford University School of Medicine and the University of California, Los Angeles revealed that wolves with black pelts owe their distinctive coloration to a mutation which occurred in domestic dogs, and was carried to wolves through wolf-dog hybridization.
It is known as the "wolf killer". The Karakachan dog was also later used in Bulgaria as a border army watchdog. The breed was almost extinguished, and was only preserved through the fierce protection and dedication of the Bulgarian shepherds in the mountain regions.
An hour for a dog feels much longer than an hour for a human because dogs perceive time more slowly due to their faster metabolism and heightened awareness of routines, so a 10-minute wait can feel like 70 minutes to them, and your hour-long absence feels like an eternity, though they don't grasp clock time but rather the intervals between events like meals, walks, and your return.
Despite their similarities, dogs and wolves differ in many ways: Domesticated dogs are naturally trainable, whereas wolves are not. While your pet puppy started socialising at four weeks' old, a wolf puppy starts socialising at just two weeks!
Terriers, gundogs, and scent hounds have the least wolf ancestry, on average. While some large guardian dogs have high wolf ancestry, others, like the Neapolitan mastiff, bullmastiff, and the St. Bernard, have none.
Dogs and wolves can indeed interbreed, producing hybrids known as wolfdogs. These offspring are viable and fertile – and can go on to reproduce themselves.
DNA analysis shows today's Shih Tzu breed is in the group of “ancient” breeds indicating “close genetic relationship to wolves”. Another branch of the breed which comes down from the “Kitchen Midden Dog” led to the Papillon and Long-haired Chihuahua and yet another “Kitchen Midden Dog” branch to the Pug and Shih Tzu.
Huskies Are Not Wolves
Despite the similar looks, the Siberian husky is not a wolf; they are separate and distinct species. The husky a type of domesticated dog, or Canis lupus familiaris, while wolves are Canis lupus.
The "heartbreak breed" refers primarily to the Great Dane, nicknamed this due to their affectionate nature combined with a relatively short lifespan (around 7-10 years) and susceptibility to serious heart conditions like dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), making losing them particularly difficult for their devoted owners. Other giant breeds like Irish Wolfhounds, Bernese Mountain Dogs, and Saint Bernards also face significant health challenges, including cancer and heart disease, often earning them similar sentiments from owners.
The Shih Tzu shares more DNA with wolves than most other breeds. The only breed group with more shared wolf DNA is the Nordic spitz group (Huskies, Samoyeds, and Malamutes). The breed almost went extinct in the early 1900s. All Shih Tzus around today are descendants of a group of 13 Shih Tzus and 1 Pekingese.
The 3-3-3 rule for dogs is a guideline for the adjustment period after adoption, outlining three phases: 3 Days (decompression, feeling overwhelmed/scared), 3 Weeks (starting to settle in, learning routine, personality emerges), and 3 Months (feeling secure, bonded, and truly at home). It helps new owners manage expectations and be patient as their rescue dog transitions, emphasizing calm energy, routine, and space in the early days to build trust.
Fortunately for us, dogs do not understand they are being put to sleep. They may behave differently at this time generally because they feed off the emotions of their closest humans, who are understandably destraught. Plus they also getting all of this extra attention so they probably wonder what is going on!
Harvard psyhologists reveal that dogs dream of their humans
What you may not have realised however is, according to new research by Harvard psychologists, your dog is likely to be dreaming about you too – their human – the most important thing in their life.
A huge majority of the livestock guardian breeds like Kangals, working bred Tibetan Mastiffs, Central Asian Shepherd Dogs, etc. would be more than capable as protection, often specifically against wolves, is what they are bred and still used for.
The primary dog breed used by U.S. Navy SEALs is the Belgian Malinois, prized for its agility, intelligence, and trainability, often working alongside handlers in high-stakes missions like the Osama bin Laden raid. Dutch Shepherds are also used, while Labrador Retrievers are common in other military roles, though Malinois are preferred for special ops due to their compact size for air/sea insertion.
