The Holy Spirit as a Dove Perhaps the most powerful avian symbol is the dove representing the Holy Spirit, which can be found throughout the art of the Basilica.
The dove is the Holy Spirit, and the four animals that St. John saw in Heaven are used as personifications of the Four Evangelists.

Pigeons and doves often appear in the Bible as animals fit to be offered to God. For example, as described in Leviticus, they were one of the options for an atoning sacrifice for those who committed several types of sin or who had become impure.
Doves are beloved. They represent peace. They represent calmness to smooth and quiet our worries and troubles. They are synonymous with the Holy Spirit.
Dove symbolises the Holy Spirit while pigeons symbolises the work of the flesh. This is a helpful (and even appropriate) comparison, however like any symbolism it can go too far.

The eagle is the symbol used to depict John the Apostle, whose writing is said to most clearly witness the light and divinity of Christ. In art, John, as the presumed author of the Gospel of John, is often depicted with an eagle, which symbolises the height to which he rose in the first chapter of his gospel.
In this verse Jesus tells his followers not to be anxious about food, but to rely on God as the birds, who are worth far less than people, are fully provided for. The Turkey vulture is a relatively large bird with a wingspan of approximately 70 inches (1.7 meters) and a total length of up to 32 inches (81 cm). It appears black from a distance but when one gets close to them on the ground it can be seen that they are actually dark brown.
One of the most well-known references to sparrows in the Bible is found in Matthew 10:29-31, where Jesus tells his disciples, “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
We also see powerful birds like eagles as pictures of strength, and owls representing desolation (Isaiah 34:11). In sacred art, the Holy Spirit is depicted as a dove, as He appears at the baptism of Jesus, while the finch is associated with Christ's Passion, and the peacock with immortality.
Primarily fire represents the presence of God, as when Moses encountered God at the burning bush, and later when God appeared in a pillar of fire to lead his people in the wilderness (Exodus 3:2; 13:21). In Acts, the tongues of fire represent the presence of God the Holy Spirit.
