Some of the most common sins we commit are related to speech: gossip, idle chatter, lies, exaggeration, harsh attack and uncharitable remarks.
There are three sins that lie behind discontent—pride, rebellion and unbelief. These are the original sins of the devil and his angels. They are sins that come from hell itself, and they continue in hell forever.

Take, then, what we find in Proverbs 21:23: “The one who guards his mouth and tongue keeps himself out of trouble.” Or Proverbs 13:3: “The one who guards his mouth protects his life; the one who opens his lips invites his own ruin.” There is wisdom in keeping your mouth shut.
Scripture tells us that silence can help us avoid sinning (Proverbs 10:19), gain respect (Proverbs 11:12), and is deemed wise and intelligent (Proverbs 17:28). In other words, you may be blessed by holding your tongue. Ultimately, refraining from speaking in certain situations means we are practicing self-control.
