Healthcare professionals should treat sepsis with antibiotics as soon as possible. Antibiotics are critical tools for treating life-threatening infections, like those that can lead to sepsis.
Most people with mild sepsis do get better. But even with intense treatment, some people die from sepsis. Up to half of all people with severe sepsis will die from it.
Observable signs that a provider may notice while assessing a septic patient include poor skin turgor, foul odors, vomiting, inflammation and neurological deficits. The skin is a common portal of entry for various microbes.
