While it's generally accepted that the first year of life is infancy, there's no agreement over how long a child is a toddler. Many organizations say toddlers are aged between one year and 3 years old (or 36 months). Some will put the upper limit as 2 years old; a few suggest the upper limit is 4 years of age.
Your four-year-old isn't a toddler anymore, but a full-fledged preschooler. Like many parents, you may be wondering what developmental milestones await you and your four-year-old, particularly as you anticipate kindergarten in the not-so-distant future.
Toddlers are children 1-3 years old. A 5 year old is considered a school aged child. The most precise term used to describe a child who is older than 36 months (3 years old) is a preschool age child. Preschoolers are children between the ages of 3-5 years old.

What Age Is Considered a Toddler? The toddler age group starts at one year old, and while the end of the toddler age range is a little less definitive, it's generally thought to come to close when a child turns 3.

Once your toddler is around 3 years old, they are often considered a preschooler. The preschool age range may extend from 3 years up until they are around 5 years old.

From starting school to entering puberty, age five to 12 is a time of great progress and development for your child. While the changes may be more gradual, your child's thinking, emotions and body will continue to develop.

Around age 3: Kids may recognize about half the letters in the alphabet and start to connect letters to their sounds. (Like s makes the /s/ sound.) Around age 4: Kids often know all the letters of the alphabet and their correct order. Around kindergarten: Most kids can match each letter to the sound it makes.

Preschooler development at 4-5 years: what's happening. At this age, preschoolers are exploring and learning to express emotions. They do this in many ways – for example, by talking, using gestures, making noises and playing. Preschoolers also like to be around people.
Around the ages of four and five, your child is likely to start developing some basic reading skills, such as phonemic awareness, and may even know some sight words. At this stage, your child may also know how to spell his or her name and recognize the letters of the alphabet.
