By mixing vinegar and baking soda you can actually create a poison that will kill rats. As with any poison however, you have to be careful when you handle it, and when you apply it.
Vinegar. The pungent smell of vinegar is also a natural way to repel mice and rats. These pests cannot stand the sharp scent of vinegar, which means it can be used as an effective rodent repellent. You can use white vinegar or apple cider vinegar for this purpose.
However, vinegar will not physically harm a mouse, so you can't use it to kill them. Another thing to consider is that many types of vinegar exist. You'll want to opt for the most pungent of them if you're trying to repel mice.

A really dilute solution of dettol shouldnt hurt but should stink enough to keep rats out - but I am still a bit cautious about spraying even highly diluted acid anywhere around my engine. I had faced the same problem with my Swift, where the building rats had chewed through a whole bunch of wires.

On a cotton ball use no more than 5 drops of 100% peppermint essential oil. Spread the oil on areas that you want rats to avoid, in your case, around the garden.
Acetic acid makes vinegar an excellent tool for pest control, repelling some of the most common backyard nuisances and even killing weaker insects. Pour equal parts peanut butter and baking soda into a small container and mix it well. A few heaped teaspoons of each will make enough bait. Spoon two or more heaped teaspoons of the bait mixture onto each small disposable saucer. Place the saucers with the bait along walls or between spaces where rats frequent.
