Hindmilk is released with every milk ejection (let-down). By the time feeding finishes on the first breast, the first milk from the second breast will contain more fat compared to the start of the feed on the first breast.
How long should a baby nurse to get hindmilk? After about 10 to 15 minutes of breastfeeding, the milk flow slows and transitions to the sweet and creamy hindmilk, which contains vitamins A and E, and has more fat and calories than foremilk.
Foremilk is the milk available when your baby starts feeding, hindmilk is the milk your baby gets at the end of a feed.
Foremilk and Hindmilk
Foremilk is the milk that is released during the beginning of nursing, immediately following let down. It will immediately quench your baby's thirst as it has a higher water content. Hindmilk is the milk that comes at the end of the nursing session, during expression.
If you are concerned that the milk you're pumping doesn't have enough hindmilk, one way to increase it is to pump for longer so that you're pumping when your breasts are emptier. (Remember, the emptier the breast, the fattier the breast milk.)
The fat content in your breast milk corresponds to the number of times you feed your baby. When you nurse your child faster than your breast milk replenishes, your baby is more likely to get the hindmilk. Consider breastfeeding on demand or upping the amount of times you feed your baby throughout the day.
Does the haakaa only collect foremilk? No. Foremilk is thinner and less fatty than hindmilk, so it flows quickly and easily during any pumping session (manual or electric).
This out-of-balance amount of foremilk causes a lactose overload for your baby. The undigested lactose has nowhere to go but the large intestine, where it gets fermented and creates a lot of gas. This gas is the root of your baby's foremilk/hindmilk imbalance symptoms.
Light green: Consistent green stools in a breastfed baby can indicate an imbalance of foremilk/hindmilk. Foremilk is the low-calorie milk that comes first in a feeding.
If your breast milk fed baby is waking up constantly hungry during the night, make sure that they are actively feeding at the breast for enough time for them to get foremilk and hindmilk. Hind milk tends to contain more fat, which will keep babies satisfied, and asleep, for longer.
If you see bright green and frothy poop in your baby's diaper that almost looks like algae, they're probably getting too much foremilk – the low-calorie milk that comes first in a feeding – and not enough hindmilk, the higher-fat, super-nutritious stuff that comes near the end.
Some moms notice the morning milk has more volume and lower fat content, while the evening milk may have more fat but be lower in volume. By pooling your breast milk, you ensure baby receives nourishment that is more uniform and consistent.
Too much foremilk is also believed to cause stomach and gastrointestinal (GI) issues in babies. The extra sugar from all that foremilk can cause symptoms such as gas, abdominal pain, irritability, crying, and loose, green bowel movements. 2 You may even think that your baby has colic.
Will a Haakaa cause me to have an oversupply? No, not necessarily. There is no “suckling motion” with a Haakaa. The Haakaa doesn't stimulate your body to produce more through suckling stimulation as a breast pump, manual expression, or a baby would.

You make more watery or thirst quenching milk in the morning, and less volume but fattier milk in the evening. This is why your baby may want to cluster feed or fuss feed in the evenings. Your milk producing hormone prolactin is highest in the middle of the night.
The first explanation is that you're not pumping long enough to get to the "hindmilk." Balanced Breastfeeding noted that since hindmilk sits further back in the duct, it's harder to draw out.
Your breasts will be very full most of the time, and you may even have plugged ducts, which can lead to mastitis (breast infection). Can I mix freshly expressed breast milk with older breast milk? Mixing freshly expressed breast milk with already cooled or frozen milk is not advised because it can rewarm the older stored milk. It is best to cool freshly expressed milk before combining it with older, previously cooled or frozen milk.
Get up with your partner for night feedings
If she's breastfeeding, helping the baby latch on, or helping mum get in a comfortable position is helpful. After feeding the baby, you can put them over your shoulder and gently pat their back to wind them.
Despite views to the contrary, breasts are never truly empty. Milk is actually produced nonstop—before, during, and after feedings—so there's no need to wait between feedings for your breasts to refill.
