Lanolin is a waxy yellow substance that is secreted by the glands of wool bearing mammals. Typically, this means from sheep. It's also called wool wax or wool grease.
Wool wax or lanolin is obtained from sheep wool by scouring. Crude lanolin constitutes about 5–25% of the weight of freshly shorn wool. The wool from one sheep will produce about 250–300 mL of recoverable wool grease.
What is Lanolin? Lanolin is a waxy substance derived mainly from the wool of sheep. The sheep's sebaceous glands produce this “wool wax” to help shed water and keep the sheep dry (9). It's extracted by putting the wool through a centrifuge machine that separates the oil from other chemicals and debris.
Any ingredient sourced from land animals' fur or related material (except pig), as long as it's harvested while the animal is still alive. This makes lanolin permitted.
If lanolin is taken from wool sheared from a live sheep, not bred for slaughter for the meat industry, this is considered to be vegetarian. Lecithin also known as E322.
Lanolin products should be avoided in people with a known allergy to wool. If you experience any increased skin irritation or pain, skin cracking, or bleeding after using lanolin cream, or your baby's mouth develops any sores or redness, you should discontinue using it.

Halal makeup can contain non-vegan ingredients such as beeswax, keratin, and lanolin—an ingredient derived from sheep's wool. Animal-derived ingredients like these are considered halal but are not vegan. Vegan makeup can contain alcohols which are not halal.

As wool is a direct product of both exploitation and cruelty, it is indisputably non-vegan.

Controversy as to lanolin's allergenicity began in the 1920s and remains an issue. The most appropriate patch test preparation(s) for detecting allergy remain disputed. Detection of lanolin-induced contact dermatitis in diseased skin by patch testing on normal skin may lead to false negative results.
Does coconut oil work as well as lanolin? Coconut oil is thought to work as effectively as lanolin, if not better, as it contains natural healing properties that can help to prevent infection. Lanolin is more of a general moisture barrier and won't have any natural healing properties.
Although chemically classified as a wax, lanolin has all the physical properties of a grease. As a lubricant, technical-grade lanolin can be used as a cost-efficient anti-friction agent for many technical processes, especially those that require high biocompatibility.
