As a general guideline, though, the American Veterinary Medical Association breaks it down like this: 15 human years equals the first year of a medium-sized dog's life.

Well, dogs are in possession of faster metabolisms and hearts that work harder than our own. Because of all this extra work, dogs age faster and, consequently, live shorter lives. It also means they grow up more quickly. A dog that's a year old is the equivalent of a human child ready to start school.

Overall, the effect of neutering on life span was greater than the effect of sex. However, we found few sex differences in causes of death in either intact or neutered dogs. The results of this study suggest limited sex effects on either longevity or causes of death in the companion dog.
The smaller breeds of dogs tend to live the longest. Yorkshire terriers, Chihuahuas, Dachshunds, Toy Poodles and Lhasa Apsos are the breeds who typically live the longest with these averaging a lifespan of up to 20 years.
Most dogs enter their senior years at around 7 years old, a little sooner for larger dog breeds. They begin to slow down, they may gain weight more easily, their senses start to dull. To estimate your dog's age you need to know its breed and that the first dog year is equal to 15 human years. The subsequent years of your dog are equal to 4-5 human years. As we said before, it all depends on what is the life expectancy of a dog with a certain breed but this is a good rough approximation.
Like many animal species, the answer lies in how fast they grow and develop. Dogs grow faster than humans, and therefore, their entire lives are accelerated.
