During the period of 1231–1259, the Yuan dynasty invaded Korea. Goryeo endured six devastating invasions at tremendous cost to civilian lives throughout the Korean Peninsula, and numerous cultural artifacts such as the Tripitaka Koreana and the Hwangnyongsa.
Approximately 3 million Chinese troops took part in the war, and an estimated 400,000 to 1,000,000 were killed in the conflict, though China's official number was only 152,000.
UN forces invaded North Korea in October 1950 and moved rapidly towards the Yalu River—the border with China—but on 19 October 1950, Chinese forces of the People's Volunteer Army (PVA) crossed the Yalu and entered the war.

Why did the PRC intervene in Korea? The PRC wanted to preserve a North Korean Communist State, but not to dominate it. Instead, the PRC wanted North Korea to serve as a buffer between Manchuria and the US dominated South Korea.
It might be said that for the United States there were two Korean Wars: the first was against the North Koreans from June through the fall of 1950, whom we defeated. The second was against the Chinese from the winter of 1950 to the summer of 1953. This was a draw.

In 109BC, China invaded and colonised Korea, establishing four commanderies ruled directly by the Chinese. The Han dynasty's control of Korea was tenuous at best and soon the peninsula split into warring local kingdoms.

Japanese rule (1910–1945)
Many Koreans formed the Righteous army to fight against Japanese rule. Korea was controlled by Japan under a Governor-General of Chōsen from 1910 until Japan's unconditional surrender to the Allied Forces on 15 August 1945.
Before the division
From 1910 to the end of World War II in 1945, Korea was under Japanese rule. Most Koreans were peasants engaged in subsistence farming. In the 1930s, Japan developed mines, hydro-electric dams, steel mills, and manufacturing plants in northern Korea and neighboring Manchuria.
The war reached international proportions in June 1950 when North Korea, supplied and advised by the Soviet Union, invaded the South. The United Nations, with the United States as the principal participant, joined the war on the side of the South Koreans, and the People's Republic of China came to North Korea's aid.
