Permethrin kills the scabies mite and eggs. Permethrin is the drug of choice for the treatment of scabies. Two (or more) applications, each about a week apart, may be necessary to eliminate all mites. Children aged 2 months or older can be treated with permethrin.
Some people need to treat two or three times to get rid of the mites. Be sure to see your dermatologist for treatment. You should never use a scabicide used to treat crops or livestock. People who develop crusted scabies, also known as Norwegian scabies, often need repeat treatments to get rid of the mites.
Permethrin lotion is usually applied to the skin in one or two treatments, but occasionally three treatments are necessary. If live mites are seen two weeks (14 days) after the first treatment with permethrin cream, then a second treatment should be applied.

Why? The rash and itching of scabies can persist for several weeks to a month after treatment, even if the treatment was successful and all the mites and eggs have been killed. Your health care provider may prescribe additional medication to relieve itching if it is severe.
The rash will heal up and go away in 2 weeks. There shouldn't be any new rash after treatment. The itching may last up to 4 weeks. Reason: It's an allergic reaction to the dead scabies.
But how do I know if I have cleared the scabies? Scabies goes away very well when the treatments and cleaning steps are followed carefully. But, if you, your child or anyone in the house is still getting new bumps two weeks after the last treatment, that person needs to be checked again.
You can get reinfected with scabies if you are exposed again after treatment. Scabies is caused by microscopic mites on people's skin or on their clothing or bedding, so anytime you are very near the mites, it's possible you can be infected. If you don't treat scabies, it can last for months.
What's the prognosis? Infestation with scabies is curable. An individual with scabies, when correctly treated, has a good prognosis, and both the itching and eczema should resolve. However, in endemic areas reinfection by future contacts is highly likely.
Scabies will not go away without treatment 1. First have a warm bath or shower. 2. Then cover the whole body with cream/lotion, from the chin down to the soles of the feet, in between the fingers, under the nails and on the private parts.
Scabies is treatable, but they can be hard to get rid of completely. Certain forms of scabies are harder to treat, such as the crusted form. In addition, you might need more than one round of treatment to make sure all of the mites are gone.

These symptoms may be a temporary reaction to the remains of the mites. This does not mean this cream did not work or that it needs to be reapplied. If you feel that the itching and rash is intense or if it continues beyond 4 weeks, talk to your doctor or health care professional right away.
Our study showed that there was no resistance to permethrin. We attribute the patients' failure to respond to treatment for two main reasons. First, the patient did not correctly apply the treatment. Second, family members did not receive treatment.
Skin irritation, including itching, swelling, and redness, may occur with scabies and temporarily worsen after treatment with permethrin. Mild burning or stinging may also occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Leave permethrin on the body for 8 to 12 hours
It's best to apply it just before going to bed and leave it on overnight.
Notably, scabies can live for 48-72 hours on a mattress. It is also important to note that scabies can still live for up to 72 hours or three days, even without human contact.
If you previously had scabies, the rash may appear from 1-4 days after being reinfected. How much skin contact do you need to catch scabies? Scabies is unlikely to be caught by short contact such as shaking hands. Longer contact is needed but could be as little as 5 to 10 minutes.
However, you do need to wash your bed and pillow sheets in hot water. This should be done the morning after applying the medication at night. You should not shower until you have put the sheets in the wash.
