People crucified by the Romans could live from a few hours to several days, even up to two weeks, depending on the method (nailed vs. tied), pre-existing injuries from scourging, and the specific conditions, with death often resulting from asphyxiation (inability to breathe) or hypovolemic shock, though guards could hasten death by breaking legs or stabbing the heart.
They could hold themselves up somewhere between 30 to 60 seconds. As this continued, the ability to rais oneself up became less and less. There was associated with this a profuse sweating terminally, and death with extreme rigidity, with the head falling forward. Death usually occurred somewhere around three hours.
In severe cases of cardiac stress, the heart can even burst, a process known as cardiac rupture. Jesus most likely died of a heart attack. After Jesus' death, the soldiers break the legs of the two criminals crucified alongside Him (John 19:32), causing suffocation. Death would then occur quicker.
Ultimately, it is impossible to make a firm calculation of how long most people lived in Jesus' time. However, while some people definitely lived into their 60s and 70s, the majority of the population probably did not.
Cases are rare, as most crucified people were not formally buried, but left on a rubbish dump to be eaten by wild dogs and hyenas. The one case we do have was a young Jewish man buried during the Roman Period, in a tomb near Giv'at ha-Mivtar in Israel.
At this time, there is no DNA test that can identify a person, especially one that has been deceased for centuries. We're getting closer, though. Geneticists have been studying ancient bones collected from Israel and Bulgaria including alleged bones from John the Baptist.
There is an ancient record of one person who survived a crucifixion that was intended to be lethal, but was interrupted. Josephus recounts: I saw many captives crucified, and remembered three of them as my former acquaintances.

Midnight to 3AM is the third watch. From 3AM to 6AM is the fourth. It was during this time that Jesus prayed and even walked on the water toward His disciples. Many believers sense that these hours carry heavy spiritual activity.
Jesus speaks of forgiveness beyond what anyone had ever considered before: seventy times seven! Many commentaries understand this to mean that Jesus was telling Peter that he should forgive his brother a limitless number of times.
Jesus's birthday is celebrated on December 25th due to a combination of early Christian calculation theories (linking it to the conception date of March 25th) and the deliberate choice to coincide with Roman winter solstice festivals like Sol Invictus to attract converts, though the actual date of his birth is unknown and likely in spring or fall.
In Mark 3:29 Jesus says that “whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.” Matthew's account adds that even blasphemy against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but not blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (Matthew 12:31–32).
It is likely that the physical toll placed on the body of Jesus from the scourging and the crucifixion contributed to a buildup of water, along with blood, around His lungs and/or heart. This built-up fluid was what came from His side when it was pierced by the soldier shortly after Jesus died.
Archaeological evidence of crucifixion is rare, as victims often didn't receive a proper burial. Additionally, most crucifixions used rope rather than nails to bind the condemned to a cross.
Why did God declare this limit to Noah? Because God was going to tell Noah to build an ark during this time to save himself and his family and the animals of the earth. Therefore, Noah needed to know how long he was being given to complete this task (i.e., 120 years).
So Jesus uses the daylight (or daytime) as a picture of His physical presence in the world, and His notes that there are only "12 hours" of daylight to emphasize that His presence on earth was to be for a limited time. Just as the daytime only last so long (12 hours) and then night comes, so was Jesus' time on Earth.
