There are two distinct pathways when seeking an adult diagnosis. Assessments can be conducted by a psychologist, or by a psychiatrist, with experience in assessing autism. Both will conduct some form of standardised testing for autism and other conditions, such as ADHD or mood disorders, and provide you with a report.
Diagnosing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be difficult because there is no medical test, like a blood test, to diagnose the disorder. Doctors look at the child's developmental history and behavior to make a diagnosis. ASD can sometimes be detected at 18 months of age or younger.
Autism diagnosis
Autism can be diagnosed from 12-18 months, but it's usually from around 2 years of age.
Your GP will make a referral to a diagnostic team to assess your child. If your child is already in school it is helpful to talk to the school's special education needs co-ordinator (SENCO). The diagnostic team usually consists of a psychiatrist, psychologist and speech and language therapist.
Evaluations can range from one-and-a-half hours to four hours or longer, and may be done in one day or over a few visits. This depends on the type of evaluation and the number of providers your child will be seeing.
In addition, many adults find that a formal diagnosis of autism brings a sense of relief and confirmation that there are legitimate reasons for their challenges. A diagnosis can also help a person focus on strengths as well as identify and work on areas of difficulty.
Defining the Traits and Behaviors of Level 1 Autism
Difficulty switching between activities. Problems with executive functioning which hinder independence. Atypical response to others in social situations. Difficulty initiating social interactions and maintaining reciprocity in social interaction.
Challenging behaviour in autistic children and teenagers
refuse or ignore requests. behave in socially inappropriate ways, like taking their clothes off in public. behave aggressively. hurt themselves or other children – for example, by head-banging or biting.
While autism is most often diagnosed in toddlers, it's possible for autistic adults to go undiagnosed.
Although 2019 research suggests some symptoms of ADHD and ASD overlap, there are distinct differences. A person with ADHD may have attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity challenges. But an autistic individual may have difficulties with communication, social interaction, and restricted or repetitive behaviors.

Common symptoms of autism in adults include: Difficulty interpreting what others are thinking or feeling. Trouble interpreting facial expressions, body language, or social cues.
Main signs of autism
finding it hard to understand what others are thinking or feeling. getting very anxious about social situations. finding it hard to make friends or preferring to be on your own.
Observations of the patient's behavior. Tests of cognitive and language abilities. Medical tests to rule out other conditions. Interviews with parents, teachers or other adults who can answer questions about the patient's social, emotional and behavioral development.

The ADOS is an assessment used for autism. The ADOS consists of structured and semi-structured subtests that involve different components of social interactions and communication.

Characteristics of Mild Autism
Repetitive or fixated behaviors, interests, or activities: Autistic people often repeat movements or words as a way to self-regulate, a behavior often referred to as “stimming.” They may also adhere to specific routines and have specific and intense interests.
Asperger's syndrome.
This is on the milder end of the autism spectrum. A person with Asperger's may be very intelligent and able to handle their daily life. They may be really focused on topics that interest them and discuss them nonstop.
The behavioral symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often appear early in development. Many children show symptoms of autism by 12 months to 18 months of age or earlier. Some early signs of autism include: Problems with eye contact.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. Some people with ASD have a known difference, such as a genetic condition. Other causes are not yet known.

Although an ASD diagnosis implies several of these psycho-social benefits, it also carries some risks: psychological risks like elevated parental stress, social risks like stigmatization, and relational difficulties in the parent–child relationship [11,21,22].
