Huntington's disease (HD) affects memory by damaging brain areas, especially the basal ganglia and frontal lobe, leading to difficulties with concentration, learning new things, organizing thoughts, and recalling information, though often retaining recognition of people/places longer than Alzheimer's. Memory issues progress from slowed processing and executive function deficits in early stages to impairments in acquiring and retrieving memories, impacting tasks like planning and decision-making, and even forgetting procedural "how-to" knowledge.
Early in the disease, cognitive decline may manifest as memory and learning difficulties, judgment impairment, and trouble with driving, answering questions or making decisions. As the disease progresses, concentration and focus on intellectual tasks become increasingly difficult.
Huntington's disease
Each child of a parent with HD has a 50% chance of inheriting the HD gene. A child who does not inherit the HD gene will not develop the disease, and generally, they cannot pass it on to their children or other future generations.
Stage V: (11 - 26 years from illness onset)

At this stage, a person with Huntington's is no longer able to do their own personal care and domestic responsibilities, and will have difficulty with mobility, needing to be in a chair or bed most of the time. Swallowing may be difficult and there may be significant weight loss.
