Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) affects face shape primarily through fat redistribution, leading to softer, fuller cheeks and rounder features in trans women, while trans men may see reduced cheek fat and a stronger jawline. HRT also changes skin texture (softer, less oily), reduces muscle mass, and slows hair growth, but it generally won't change bone structure, though these soft tissue changes create a more gender-aligned appearance over time.
HRT does change some facial shape, but it does not reduce any existing bone structure... so trans femmes who started their transition after their early-to-mid 20s may find FFS to be useful.
Signs of Low-Estrogen Skin:
Sagging with visible loss of elasticity. More prone to damage from UV radiation and pollution. Uneven tone with increased pigmentation. Hollowing in the cheeks and temples.
6-12 months: Thinning and slowing of growth of facial and body hair gradually becomes more noticeable. 3-5 years: Most estrogen HRT treatments take 3-5 years on full dosages for a patient to see the maximum extent of their effects on the body.
The higher a woman's levels of oestrogen the less the bones on her face grow (as well as her chin and nose). The more oestrogen a woman has the fuller her lips are, the more fat she has on her cheeks, hips and buttocks.
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been shown to increase epidermal hydration, skin elasticity, skin thickness (Sator et al 2001), and also reduces skin wrinkles (Phillips et al 2001). Furthermore, the content and quality of collagen and the level of vascularization is enhanced (Brincat et al 1987).
The associations of oestrogen with attractiveness and health ratings also provide evidence that markers of oestrogen are consistently seen as attractive and healthy. Luteal progesterone levels were found to relate marginally to health and attractiveness ratings of faces.
Cheeks: Feminine cheeks are more prominent than men's, with a rounder, fuller aesthetic. Lips: Feminine lips are fuller and more defined than men's and are closer to the base of the nose. Chin and jawline: Feminine chins tend to be softer and less squared than masculine jawlines, but with a slightly pointier chin.
After starting HRT, you may notice the following changes:
How a Facelift Surgery Can Take 10 Years Off Your Face. If you are seeking a more youthful appearance for your face, a facelift surgery might be the procedure you're looking for. This surgery, called a rhytidectomy, will remove major wrinkles, smooth lines and reduce sagging skin on your face and neck.
It's natural for our face to change shape as we age. Skin becomes loose and sagging, bones lose their mass, and muscles lose their strength as a result of time spent living life.
Estrogen is often considered the “beauty hormone” due to its positive effects on skin. It plays a vital role in: Collagen production: Estrogen helps maintain skin thickness and elasticity by stimulating collagen production, which keeps skin firm and youthful.
What are the symptoms of low estrogen levels?
Symptoms of high estrogen levels
Body Shape – A woman's body shape can provide a visual clue to what their estrogen levels are. If you are short, curvy, and have well developed breasts, you are more likely to have higher estrogen levels. This also means that you might experience more drastic changes when your estrogen levels fluctuate.
Hormonal imbalances show up as symptoms like fatigue, mood swings, weight changes, irregular periods, skin issues (acne), hair changes, sleep problems, brain fog, low libido, digestive issues, and temperature sensitivity, affecting energy, body functions, and mental well-being, often linked to stress, thyroid, or reproductive hormones.
What Does A High Estrogen Face Look Like? High estrogen levels can cause puffiness, redness, or acne on the face. Skin may appear more oily, and some women experience melasma (dark patches on the skin).
Is there any food or drink I need to avoid? You can eat and drink normally while taking continuous combined HRT. Try to have a healthy diet, as this can help with menopause symptoms and keep you well. Cutting down on alcohol and caffeine may help reduce hot flushes.
The first is physical. The first changes you will probably notice are that your skin will become a bit drier and thinner. Your pores will become smaller and there will be less oil production.
Estrogen can reduce the size and strength of the masseter muscle, which is the main muscle of the jaw. This can result in a softer and slimmer jawline, a more rounded and oval face shape, and a more feminine facial expression.
While no single face shape is universally seen as the most attractive, certain characteristics appeal more to different individuals. Popular female face shapes include oval, round, square, heart, diamond, and triangle.
The results showed that both gender and age contributed to the perceived gender and age of the faces according to a saturated observer model. In judgments of gender (Experiment 1), female faces were perceived as more masculine as they became older.
For example, estrogen levels are at their highest during the first half of the cycle, which can result in clearer skin and a more even skin tone. However, progesterone levels increase during the second half of the cycle, and this can cause oilier skin, acne breakouts, and sensitive skin.
Less facial and body hair growth.
This begins 6 to 12 months after treatment starts. The full effect happens within three years.
Estrogen: The Skin's Silent Supporter
Estrogen stimulates collagen production, increases skin thickness, and boosts hydration by encouraging hyaluronic acid synthesis. As estrogen levels decline during perimenopause and menopause, the skin loses its plumpness, leading to wrinkles, thinning, and dryness.
